MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas—About 150 Northeast Texas residents converged here Wednesday to oppose the proposed Marvin Nichols Reservoir.

“If Marvin Nichols is built, it will not only take away our land, it will take away our community, our church,” said Red River County resident Nina Holt. “And our cemetery. My mother and father are buried there, my grandchild is buried there,” she said through tears.

“And compensation for our land, it’s never been for sale. It’s a way of life, and there’s no compensation for that.”
