Food rescue officials say they are spread thin trying to meet needs

Harvest Texarkana food rescue program is all about saving some food.

The program picks up excess food from restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores and other businesses or organizations and distributes it to emergency food providers, food pantries, shelters and other nonprofit agencies to help feed the hungry.

“Waste not, want not,” said Michelle Miller, Harvest Texarkana agency relations director.

But with schools, a major contributor to the program, out for the summer the shortage is being felt by recipient agencies.
