Respect the mike: Poets teach students the power of words

Poets in the Streets visited Texas Middle School Friday as part of Texarkana Regional Arts Center’s ArtsSmart programming.

Little Rock poets Amoja Sumler, performing as The Mo-Man, and Kim Marshall, performing as Krysis, presented poetry and re-visited many of the literary writings and writers tools they presented earlier in the week.

“We have a saying in open mike and slam poetry— ‘respect the mike,’” Marshall told students in Linda Hagemann’s seventh-grade classroom. The students were reading poems they were familiar with.
