Player reflects on his outstanding career as a teacher and coach

Player is holding a football autographed by Marcus Allen, one of his former players, and the plaque behind him recognizes his state and county championships. The Texarkana native coached 18 seasons in San Diego, where he won numerous championships and helped several players reach the NFL, including Allen, Terrell Davis and Akili Smith. Player, the last man to make the team, was approached by his coach, who asked why he was crying and why he was in college. His response was that he was crying because he was never going to get to play, but he was in college to get an education. “We are willing to pay you $16,000 a year for an education and you don’t have to go out there and get your head beat in,” Player recalls his coach saying to him. “Then what in the hell are y...
