Pilgrim's Pride expands recall of cooked chicken products

WACO, Texas-Pilgrim's Pride is expanding a 5 million pound recall that federal food safety regulators say includes a variety of chicken products potentially contaminated with foreign materials.

Friday's announcement is the second expansion of a recall that began April 7 after the largest poultry producer in the U.S. received consumer complaints regarding plastic contamination of chicken nuggets, according the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The agency said there have been "no confirmed reports of adverse reactions" due to eating the products.

The recall was expanded on April 26, when Pilgrim's Pride recalled about 4.53 million pounds of fully cooked chicken nuggets produced on various dates from Aug. 21, 2014, to March 1, according to the USDA.

Consumers are still urged to throw away or return the products. Food inspectors have previously announced finding items such as wood, plastic, rubber and metal.

"Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a health care provider. ... These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase," the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service's Website states.

The latest recall involves products produced between May 6 and Dec. 3, 2015. Affected products include boxes and bags of various Green Dragon and Sweet Georgia Brand fully cooked chicken products, with a variety of packaging and use-by and sell-by dates. The Green Dragon products in this recall are all diced chicken leg meat with sauce flavors including General Tso's, Sweet Sriracha Glaze, Teriyaki, Japanese Cherry Blossom, New Orleans Brand and Tangerine.
