Illegal Immigration: Would you report undocumented immigrants to federal authorities?

S

ome unidentified folks took to the campus of Texas State University in San Marcos this week and left leaflets urging students to call immigration authorities on illegal aliens.

The leaflets included the phone number and website address for students to contact federal authorities.

TSU sent out staff to collect the leaflets and officials later told reporters the school itself would not report immigration status of its students, but also would not bow to demands from some quarters to become a "sanctuary school" where illegal immigrants are specifically protected.

There is a lot of controversy over illegal immigration, and the divide on the issue has only grown larger since the election of Donald Trump as president. Trump made trying to stop illegal immigration a central point of his campaign.

We want to know what you would do. If you knew of illegal immigrants living in Texarkana or the surrounding area, would you report them to federal authorities? Or would you choose not to do so?

Send your response (50 words maximum) to [email protected] by Wednesday, Dec. 14. You can also mail your response to the Texarkana Gazette Friday Poll, at P.O. Box 621, Texarkana, TX 75504. Be sure to include your name, address and phone number. We will print as many responses as we can in next Friday's paper.

Last Week: The Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport

Our question last week was about a suggestion to remove the names of former President Bill Clinton and his wife, former Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Hillary Clinton, from the Little Rock Airport. Should the airport's name be changed or remain the same?

Leave the name the Little Rock airport alone. Even if was named after someone I don't support, I wouldn't want it changed again. It's ridiculous of Sen. Rapert to exclaim that all of Arkansas doesn't support the Clinton's.-J.E., Texarkana, Ark.

It is time to stop persecuting the Clinton's. The Republicans need to get over it. They have a so called Republican president elect and control the house and senate. I am sick and tired of hearing what Republicans support.-D.J., Texarkana, Texas

No. Bill Clinton served as attorney general for Arkansas, governor of Arkansas, and President of the United States. Hillary Clinton was first lady of Arkansas, a United States senator, secretary of state and popular vote winning presidential candidate. Mr. Rapert is an attention seeking small time rural politician.-J.W., Texarkana, Texas

I say remove the Clintons' name from the Little Rock Airport. I, born and raised in Arkansas, cannot think of one single thing they have done for Arkansas except embarrass us with one scandal after another. One thing to remember, don't name a building or school etc. after anyone when a scandal pops up, oops you have to change the name.-D.S., Texarkana, Ark.

You can't tell me that the majority of the people in Arkansas don't remember and still like President Bill Clinton. So why take his name off the Little Rock Airport? Most think he was a good governor and a good two-term president. I don't "get it" -B.J., Texarkana, Texas

Rename Little Rock Airport for Texarkana native Federal District Judge Susan Webber Wright, former law student of Bill Clinton. She fined him $250,000 for lying in his deposition in the Paula Jones case. Clinton agents called Paula "trailer trash." It's time we stopped trashing Arkansas and the Little Rock Airport.-T.A.J., Texarkana, Ark.

Leave the airport name as it is. State Sen. Rapert should spend his time and energy on things that will make Arkansas a better place in which to live. He should address bonafide issues/problems that need to be solved in our state. People should not believe all the bogus stories shared about the Clintons on "Fakebook" during the recent election, nor should they swallow all the conspiracy theories about them that have circulated for years. Logic should dictate decisions, not inflammatory rhetoric from Clinton foes.-B.R., Ashdown, Ark.

Honor these people by naming the Little Rock airport after criminals? These people were criminals before he was governor of the state. Give us a break! All of our elected officials should reflect all of the honest, straight up people that vote in an election. They certainly do not get my respect or my vote as before they got established in little Rock they were engaged in several "self-serving" projects! Whitewater was the first one the public got word of.-D.M., Texarkana, Texas

Yes, the Little Rock airport should continue to honor the Clintons. Bill Clinton served as governor of Arkansas for three terms. He served as President of the U.S. from 1993-2001. My, what an accomplishment! Hillary's whole adult life (like Bill's) has been about service-a lawyer, first lady of Arkansas and the United States, two term senator from New York, and secretary of state. The Clintons have continued to serve others with the Clinton Family Foundation.-M.M., Washington, Ark.

The Little Rock National Airport, I think, should keep the name given in their honor in 2012. In our great country, it should not be allowed to do that. They earned that honor, and certainly deserve to keep it.-D.B., Naples, Texas

Is Jason looking for saints in politicks, none qualify? Bush ruined our economy, lied about Iraq. Regan-Bush gave weapons to Iran-Contra, defunded mental health. Eisenhower took our Social Security money. I did not support their greedy policies. Rapert doesn't speak for this Arkansan. Is our country still ruled for and by all of the people?-S.F., Fouke, Ark.

Yes, I think the name of the airport should be changed.-S.S., Hope, Ark.

  • I can't stand the Bushes but I have to look at their name when I fly out of Dallas. Arkansas legislature needs to find some real problems to solve. Suck it up and get over it.
  • I think there are bigger issues to spend time on instead of something as petty as this subject. That does nothing good for the state of Arkansas in which you lawmakers were elected to do.
  • Arkansas should be proud that it has the Clintons to tout, who have played such major roles in American history regardless of political affiliation.
  • This is the dumbest thing I've seen in a while. Do your job and quit trying to make a name for yourself. You are literally hating on the Clintons to get your name out there. Go to work, do the job you were hired to do. Or come next election your are fired.
  • Leave it there's bridges and airports named after other presidents that people don't like just a part of history no matter how good or bad.
  • I support Bill and Hillary Clinton. They both have served the people well.
  • Can we talk about how we need to move forward on more pressing matters? We vote people in to make important decisions about our lives. This is not one of them.
  • This is clearly the most important issue the Arkansas Legislature should be attending to.
  • Why can't it stay the same? Would you rather have it called the Trump port?
  • I think we have bigger issues to worry about.
  • It should have never been changed to begin with.
  • Change it ASAP.
