Computer Coding: Texarkana should look to new ASU program for inspiration

Everyone knows the value of a college degree.

But there is still room for vocational training. Especially in today's economy where a traditional four-year degree often comes with a lot of debt.

Traditional trade education has great value. But so do new takes that focus on today's information age.

The University of Central Arkansas has come up with a great idea. Last week the school announced it has established the Arkansas Coding Academy.

The course, in partnership with Metova Inc.-an app development company-and other Arkansas businesses, teaches students how to write computer code-a skill that pays well and is in demand.

The three-month course promises to have students ready for the marketplace and offers job assistance for those who graduate.

We think this is a fine idea. And one that Texarkana would do well to emulate.

We have several colleges here in town. And there is no reason a similar program could not be developed here.

The demand for coding professionals is only going to grow. And it's a field where skill and talent mean more than advanced degrees.

ACU is investing in the future with the Arkansas Coding Academy. In our view it's a wise investment.

We think it would be a wise investment for our area as well.
