What's In A Name?: New poll indicates most Native Americans don't care about Redskins team moniker

For quite some time now, there has been a controversy over the Washington Redskins' name.

Some say it is offensive and degrading to Native Americans.

Others, including the team owner Dan Snyder, say the name honors the Native American community. Snyder has vowed never to change the name.

But do most football fans, indeed most Americans of any heritage, really care?

Doesn't look like it.

A recent Washington Post poll show found that 90 percent of those who identify as Native American don't consider the Redskins controversy very important.

Polls in 2004 and 2014 found that among the public as a whole, fewer than 25 percent think the name should be changed.

But still activists press on-joined in some cases by politicians-and Washington Redskins ownership resists.

We want to know what you think. Is the whole issue of the Washington Redskins' name really that important? Or are some making too much of nothing?

Send your response (50 words maximum) to [email protected] by Wednesday, May 25. You can also mail your response to the Texarkana Gazette Friday Poll, at P.O. Box 621, Texarkana, TX 75504. Last Week: UFOs

Last week's poll was about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton announcement she would, if elected, release government files on UFOs. Is the government hiding information on UFOs and alien encounters. Or is this just a lot of hokum?

Is there life beyond our planet? This isn't going to be answered by lying Hillary! She can't even tell the truth about Benghazi! The aliens are of this earth not from another planet. This would not be understood by most people because they don't believe the word of God, the Bible. They will only believe when Revelations comes to reality and than it is too late for nonbelievers and those that died beforehand and not believing! When aliens are known that is when the end is near! Because man will no longer have morals toward each other and themselves!-D.T., Simms, Texas

Personally I do not believe there ever was some kinda' flying round object hovering over Nevada, not 70-plus years ago or since. Secretary Clinton is only bringing that *myth" up to influence the few thousand who actually believe in UFO's, for their votes. In my opinion, of course.-B.J., Texarkana, Texas

  •     We have no problem believing in a God, His son and angels looking over us but for some the idea that God didn't create just one planet with life is too hard to believe. On Earth as it is in (the) Heavens (the skies is what they were talking about). Life may not exist that's like us, who wants life that's prejudiced, narrow-minded, and constantly afraid of change? Hopefully life elsewhere is more advanced
  •     It really doesn't matter. Monica's ex-boyfriend's wife is only pandering for a few votes with this.
  •     Crazy!
