School incident

TO THE EDITOR:

After reading the Jeers written by L.L. on Oct. 1, 2011, you have to wonder about the board members of the Texarkana, Ark., School District, when a talented teacher like Glen Knod resigns because of correcting a young man for baggy pants with underwear showing that fell completely down when Mr. Knod touched them.

Mr. Knod had parents who taught him manners and respect for his fellow man. This is what Mr. Knod was teaching this young man. This is a talented teacher they let get away because he was teaching this young man manners and respect. Please do not accept his resignation.

Class warfare

TO THE EDITOR:

"Time to rethink class in class warfare" column by John Crisp is a shadow piece to the Elizabeth Warren rant about the "social contract." Crisp plays fast and loose with words as well as history. Yes, we are all created equal; but not in the sense he attempts to portray "equality." We are equal in the eyes of the law and to claim that equality applies in all other areas of life is patently absurd. Our nation is not politically a democracy but a representative republic and "equality" stops at the courtroom door. We are a meritocracy in which those with the ability to accumulate wealth are the "class" he deplores. His theory is that those who seek the "greater good" should be the beneficiaries of the "social contract" simply because they do not seek wealth. Who then provides the wealth? Government? It can only redistribute what it forcibly takes from a wealth creator. To say that the wealthy owe their success to the sacrifices of others belies the fact that in the pursuit of wealth they have paid a disproportionate amount to finance the infrastructure, the social services, the military, et al. Crisp closes by quoting Scripture when he should have been quoting Marx. Further, I have looked in vain to find the "social contract" in our Constitution.
