Easy Arrest: Ankle monitor leads the police to robbery suspect

We have all heard the stories of criminal suspects who do incredibly stupid things that lead to their being arrested.

Like the bank robber who wrote his demand note on the back of his personal deposit slip. Or the guy in England who posted a selfie on Facebook while he was robbing a grocery store. Or the burglar who falls asleep in his victim's home.

There was even a U.S. reality show called "America's Dumbest Criminals" that ran for four years back in the 1990s.

The stories are fun. We are all happy when a crook gets caught. And they make the point that crime indeed does not pay. Especially if you're not all that bright.

Which brings us back home to Texarkana and the case of a 24-year-old suspect who, well, could have been featured on that TV show.

Monday night a man at a convenience store on College Drive reported he had been robbed of about $175. Texas-side police dispatched a unit to investigate. The next day a detective recognized the suspect's description. And he knew the man he believed responsible was out on bond on another charge and was required to wear an ankle monitor.

You can guess what happened next.

Yes, the ankle bracelet's tracking put the suspect at the store during the robbery and allowed police to go right to his location and make an arrest. The suspect was taken into custody and his bond revoked. He's cooling his heels at the Bi-State Justice Building Jail.

Now, we make no assumptions as to his guilt or innocence. That's up to a court.

It's an amusing tale. And we wish that's all it is. But there is a darker side.

The suspect was out on bond after being indicted on a charge of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old child. It makes us wonder why he was on the streets at all, even with a monitor. All we can say is that we are glad he's back behind bars.
