Conspiracy?: It's been 54 years since JFK assassination. Do you believe there was a conspiracy?

This week marks the 54th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas.

It was a shocking event that lives on in the memories of many readers, who can still recall where they were that dreadful day.

Some were in school. Some were watching the TV when the tragedy unfolded. Others were at work.

In just a few hours, the prime suspect, Lee Harvey Oswald, was arrested in a movie theater after allegedly killing a Dallas police officer. And two days later Oswald was dead at the hands of strip club owner Jack Ruby.

It was all too neat for some. Though the Warren Commission investigated and found that Oswald, acting alone, killed the president, it seems few Americans accept that conclusion.

The interest in the JFK assassination has been especially keen this year, as many of the last-remaining documents related to the investigation were finally released. There was no smoking gun, but the fact that many of the documents were still heavily redacted for national security purposes only fueled allegations of conspiracy and cover-up.

The Mafia, the Cubans, the CIA, the Military-Industrial Complex-even the conspiracy crowd's favorite bugaboo, the Illuminati-have all been blamed. So many believe there was a conspiracy, they just can't seem to agree who was behind it.

We want to know what you think. Do you believe Oswald, acting alone, assassinated President John F. Kennedy? Or do you believe there was a conspiracy?

Send your response (50 words maximum) to [email protected] by Wednesday, Nov. 29. You can also mail your response to the Texarkana Gazette Friday Poll, P.O. Box 621, Texarkana, TX 75504, or drop it off at our office, 101 E. Broad St., Texarkana, AR. Be sure to include your name, address and phone number. We will print as many responses as we can in next Friday's paper.

Last Week: Black Friday?

Last week's question was about Christmas shopping. Do you support Texarkana businesses by doing most of your holiday shopping at local retailers? Or do you make most of your purchases online?

Personally, I like going out there to Christmas shop. Likely, I'm probably the only man you know who likes to shop. I especially like to shop for Christmas presents for my wife, have never bought anything online, and don't intend to. If I can't find it in my stores around here, guess what I do? •     Although I don't shop on Black Friday, I wish it would go back to being on Friday. They are asking employees who probably wish to be with their families to work so people can save a few dollars. Don't know who decided that opening doors on Thursday was a good idea but my personal opinion is that it's wrong on several levels.
  •    I travel 45 minutes to shop in Texarkana, I should shop in my hometown but it's very expensive and not a lot to choose from. Sometimes I shop online but I love going to Texarkana for shopping and restaurants!
  •    It should go back to the old Black Friday, not Thursday. I shop local.
