Fair Deal?: Is annual event good or bad for Texarkana?

As the Four States Fair and Rodeo prepares to wrap up this weekend, we have been seeing a lot of comments on social media and hearing opinions around town.

Many love the fair and look forward to it every year. They enjoy the rodeo, the rides, the attractions and perhaps most of all, the food. They see it as a good thing for the city and area.

Others aren't so keen. They think the overall cost is too high, especially for families on a budget. We have seen complaints about limited handicapped accessibility. Some say security could be better and teenagers and young men often cut in line or otherwise make nuisances of themselves.

And of course local merchants, restaurant owners and service workers have long argued the fair cuts into their business and takes money out of the local economy.

We want to know what you think. Do you think the annual Four States Fair and Rodeo is a positive for Texarkana? Or do you think the negatives outweigh the benefits??

Send your response (50 words maximum) to [email protected] by Wednesday, Sept. 20. You can also mail your response to the Texarkana Gazette Friday Poll, at P.O. Box 621, Texarkana, TX 75504 or drop it off at our office, 101 E. Broad St., Texarkana, Ark. Be sure to include your name, address and phone number. We will print as many responses as we can in next Friday's paper.

Last Week: Flu Shot

Last week's question was about the annual flu vaccine. Do you get the flu vaccine every year? Or do you have a reason to avoid getting the shot?

I do get a flu shot. It's a personal decision. My wife doesn't. I recall when my dad got one and he got the flu anyway and said never again oh well.-B.J., Texarkana, Texas

  • Yes. I have an immuno-compromised child and granddaughter and I would hate to be the cause of either of them becoming seriously ill.
  • Haven't ever had the flu shot either. Don't plan on getting one this year either. I'd be the one to get sick after taking it.
  • I choose not to get the flu shot. A specialist in Little Rock told me my immune system was too bad to get one. I have multiple autoimmune diseases.
  • No. The one time I did get the flu shot it gave me pneumonia. It is a side effect. Never took the flu shot before and never had pneumonia 'til I did.
  • No. I'm in my 50s and have never had a shot or the flu.
  • Flu shot or rat poison tough decision.
  • Nope.
  • No, I trust my immune system more than chemicals.
