Insensitive?: Should Texarkana's Hobo Jungle Park be renamed?

On Saturday we ran a reader submission to Cheers and Jeers that brought up an interesting idea.

The writer talked about Hobo Jungle Park in the College Hill area of Texarkana and said the name was a thoughtless and uncaring reference to homeless people.

The suggestion was the name be changed to something more positive such as "Peace Park" or "Martin Luther King. Jr. Park."

This isn't the first time some have complained about the name. We saw a discussion not too long ago on Facebook. While some decry the connotations, other say it just recognizes history when the area was a campground for travelers known as hobos who rode the rails and stopped for a while in Texarkana. They say there is nothing derogatory to anyone in the name.

We want to know what you think. Is the name Hobo Jungle Park inappropriate and should it be changed? Or should it remain the same?

Last Week: Trade War?

Last week's question was about the President Donald Trump's handling of the U.S. trade with the European Union and countries such as Canada and China. Do you support the way President Trump is addressing the trade situation? Or do you think a "trade war" is a bad strategy?

  •  The country is headed for a recession. Things may look like roses and sunshine right now but it won't last forever. However you would never be able to convince the current president's supporters or more like followers of the fact. It looks as if they will just have to find out the hard truth for themselves unfortunately.
  •  We attack our allies? Threaten tariffs? Meanwhile Canada and Mexico find new markets to buy and sell their goods? And now the rest of the G7 will soon follow suit. Which means less sales. Which means less products needed. Which means layoffs. Add in the higher prices WE will be paying and you are going to see a downturn in our economy.
  •  100% support.
  •  I can see all the people that have no idea how economics work. If you have nothing to trade because you sent everything overseas, then other than fast food your not going to have a job. But the Hillary, Obama loving fools (don't) know how to think for themselves.
  •  This country had a very good economy back when we had factories where we made our own products. Now when we have foreign exchange students, tourists, and etc. and they want to take a souvenir home, their souvenirs are made in China. The only way America will ever have jobs and job stability is to start making quality products in America. There are many many things that could and should be done to bring back the economy in the U.S. The tariffs may at first be hard but in the end it will be a win for the U.S.
