Texas Primaries: Lone Star Republicans, Democrats head to the polls today

Everybody has an opinion on the best direction forward for our country.

Many of our readers are conservatives who identify with the Republican Party. Others would consider themselves more progressive or liberal and tend to vote for Democrats.

Well if you live in Texas, today's the day when you get to express your opinion on who best represents your views in a more substantial way than just posting on Facebook or sounding off over a cold one.

The Democratic and Republican primary elections are today. Voters will go to the polls and select candidates for a number of national, state and local races to battle it out in the midterm elections in November.

All U.S. House seats are up for election as is U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz's seat. Cruz faces four challengers from his own party and the Democrats are fielding three candidates.

A number of governor, lieutenant governor, land commissioner and agriculture commissioner candidates are also on the ballot. All Texas House seats and half the state senate, too. Then there are county and municipal races as well.

Texas is an open primary state, so when you go to the polls you can choose in which party's primary you wish to cast your ballot. But remember if there is a runoff, you can only vote in the same party's runoff election.

Remember as well to bring acceptable photo identification to the polls. A Texas driver's license, a Texas election identification certificate, a Department of Public Safety-issued personal identification card. a state handgun license, a U.S. military ID card that includes a photo, a U.S. citizenship certificate that includes a photo and a U.S. passport will all work.

If you don't have an ID, you can still cast a ballot  as long as you have a valid voter registration card, a certified birth certificate, current utility bill, bank statement, pay stub or other document with your name and address and then sign a form swearing you have a "reasonable impediment" to obtaining
a photo ID.

We encourage our readers to vote today. Make your voice heard where it will actually count.
