For the Cure: This weekend marks 20 years of caring and sharing

It's become a Texarkana tradition. A tradition of hope.

Since 1998, local and area residents have gathered in the fall to show support for the victims and survivors of breast cancer and to raise money to hasten the day when that disease will be nothing more than a memory.

This year marks the 20th anniversary for the local race. That's a big deal. Twenty years of caring and sharing.

Each year thousands participate in the race and bring in hundreds of thousand of dollars in donations. Since its inception, the local organization has raised more than $5 million to fight breast cancer. Most of that money stays right here at home.

The Party in Pink kickoff is at 7 p.m. tonight at Silvermoon on Broad Street in downtown Texarkana. There will be a silent auction and local favorite the Robert St. John Band will play. Tickets are $50 per person.

This year the race is being held downtown, with festivities kicking off at Front Street Plaza. There will be two routes-a 5K competitive course for runners that starts at Hopkins Ice House on East Thirrd Street and a 1.5-mile walking route that starts on Front Street.

Registration for the race begins at 7 a.m. Saturday. Opening ceremonies start at 8:30 a.m. and participants take to their course at 9 a.m. Awards will follow and at 10:30 a.m. there will be a brunch for breast cancer survivors in the Regions Bank Building lobby.

There is still time to get involved and do your part. We hope to see you there.
