Tax-Free Weekend: Save money and shop locally

It's not too late to get in on back-to-school deals during the Texas Tax-Free weekend.

The annual event started Friday and continues today through midnight on Sunday.

Arkansas held its annual tax-free shopping spree last weekend. Now the Lone Star State is taking its turn.

A wide variety of school supplies will be free of sales tax. Also many types of clothing and footwear will be tax-free as well.

Goods must be priced at under $100 each. And shoppers will save about $8.25 per $100 spent. That adds up, especially if there are a lot of school-age children in the house. So much so the Texas Public Accounts comptroller estimates $102.2 million in savings for consumers for the three-day holiday.

Another benefit to the tax-free weekend? While the tax break also applies to online sales, the holiday encourages people to shop locally. That's good for the Texarkana economy as a whole and especially benefits business owners and their employees, whose wages are often spent with other local retailers.

It might get a bit hectic out there today, so drive safely. And keep your dollars working here at home.
