Mac's Message

Grocery chain shares faith for all to see

Not far from the Twin Cities, there is a small chain of grocery stores called Mac's Cashsaver, known in some locations as Mac's Fresh Market.

The company has locations in towns like Camden, El Dorado and Magnolia. And they just made the national news.

Mac's sends out a weekly mailer advertising sales and discounts, just like most other grocers.

This week, though, shoppers got a message with their mailer. At the top of the mailer were these words: "Heaven has a wall, a gate and a strict immigration policy. Hell has open borders. Let that sink in."

Apparently this is nothing new. The company says they often put in a religious or political message. And they stand by them.

This one has created something of a stir. At least outside Southeast Arkansas. We don't think Mac's is too worried. It's a family-owned company and open about its owners' Christian outlook.

Indeed, owner John McFarland told Business Insider that he was "astounded" by the reaction-which he said was overwhelmingly positive-and doesn't plan to stop running messages. The next mailer will include an anti-abortion quote from Ronald Reagan.

And that's just fine. Mac's is paying to print those circulars and can say what they want. If anyone objects strongly, well we are sure there are other grocery venues in Southeast Arkansas and environs.

Somehow, though, we don't think that's going to be a problem for Mac's. The message may be controversial in other parts of the country, but not down here where the store's customers are.
