Affordable: Texarkana ranks well as place to live on minimum wage

Where do you want to live if you're making minimum wage?

Well, as it turns out Texarkana is a pretty good choice.

The website Walletwyse released a report Jan. 1 ranking cities across the country in affordability for those earning minimum wage.

The site narrowed it down by comparing the cost of housing and average debt-to-income ratio. The rankings based affordability for a individual working 2,000 hours a year at minimum wage.

Texarkana, Texas, with a $7.25 minimum wage, comes in at a 7.56 debt-to-income ratio, making it one of the more affordable cities in America for minimum-wage workers. The Arkansas side wasn't ranked separately but would have faired even better at the now higher $9.25 minimum.

Little Rock, for example, had a ratio of 7.55 compared to Dallas-Fort Worth at 16.40 and Shreveport at 8.30.

But housing affordability played a big role, so some cities with a low minimum wage and low housing costs ranked higher than those with a higher wage and higher costs.

The Twin Cities aren't the most affordable on the list, but we are among the best places to live on minimum wage. And while everyone wants to earn more, being able to better afford a decent place to live on whatever your wage is nothing to sneeze at.
