Annual event provides fun on the lake

Looking for some fun today? Something a bit out of the ordinary?

Then head down to Bringle Lake for the fourth annual Texarkana Dragon Boat Festival.

The festival has grown to be quite popular in just a few years. But some folks have yet to attend. Indeed, some readers may be wondering just what the heck is dragon boat racing?

Well according to the texarkanadragonboatfestival.com website, it's a sport that originated more than 2,500 years ago in China. Now it's popular worldwide as a sport and for fundraising and team building.

At today's races, you will see teams of 20 competing by rowing their vessels in unison to the beat of a drum.

Races kick off at 9 a.m. and continue until around 4 p.m. With about 19 teams competing, there will be a full day of fun. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets to view the races in comfort.

There will be live music and plenty of food vendors to make the day even more enjoyable.

The day benefits HandOn Texarkana, which has promoted volunteerism in the Twin Cities for 50 years. Volunteerism is vital to our community and that's one more reason to come out and support the festival.
