Abortion

TO THE EDITOR:Recently, I was asked my opinion on the abortion issue. My answer was simple. In the Bible, in Jeremiah chap-ter one, God told Jeremiah, "Before you were in your mother's womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I had a purpose for your life." For me, this verse answers the abor-tion question directly. Does a woman have the right to abort her unborn baby? If the only law being referred to is the Constitution, then the answer is debatable because the Constitution does not address the abortion issue. If it does not forbid it, then many Americans claim it permits it. However, if the law you adhere to is the Bible, then the answer is a resounding, "No!" Then which is the most important, the Constitution or the Bible? In his farewell address to the American people, outgoing president George Washington said that morality is necessary for popular government. He also said that, "reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of reli-gious principle." He believed that without the Bible as the foundation for popular gov-ernment, our Constitution would be useless. What the abortion debate boils down to is whether or not a person believes that the Bible is God's Word or not. If you believe the Bible is always true, then abortion is always wrong! If you do not believe that the Bible is true, then anything goes-murder, theft, hatred, homosexuality, etc. Do not confuse the issue. The debate is not over abor-tion-it is over the Bible. "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."Dale WeeksTexarkana, Texas
