Letter to the Editor: Rate increase

TO THE EDITOR:

You may have heard about SWEPCO's recent request to increase rates for Texas customers. I understand that paying more for electricity can be an added financial burden for families and businesses. However, as a SWEPCO employee, I've had a chance to learn more about the request, and I believe it will help us provide cleaner power and a stronger electric system.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas has started an independent, public review of our request. The biggest part of the proposal would help pay for new environmental equipment that we have installed on four major power plants to meet federal regulations which allows them to continue providing reliable 24/7 power. We are also seeking funds to increase our tree trimming program to further reduce outages. The increase, if approved, will allow us to continue investing in facilities and operating costs needed to serve customers. Our rates would still be below the state average and well below the national average.

I live in Texarkana and I've worked for SWEPCO for more than 24 years, much of that time in this area. My SWEPCO coworkers and I work directly with customers and our communities to make sure they are getting the most out of their power company. Rate increases affect everyone, but with this proposal, our company seeks to serve Texas customers with cleaner power generation and a stronger electric system that continues our long-standing commitment to safe, reliable and affordable power.
