Cheers & Jeers

Cheers & Jeers

January 7th, 2017 in Opinion Letters

JEERS: In regard of our recent cost of living adjustment of 0.3% in 2017. This week I received a letter of social security benefits informing me of my increase of $2.10 monthly. I thought great, I can get an extra loaf of cheap bread next month. But, hold on a minute, as I read on, there would be an increase in my Medicare medical insurance premium. The increase is, you guessed it, $2.10. There went that extra loaf of bread. I'm not looking forward to the 2018 COLA, I may not be able to afford that increase.—G.W., Maud, Texas.

JEERS: To Jim Williamson on your article about Millwood Lake and Dam. There was no mention of Southwest Arkansas Water District. The original directors of SWAWD were responsible for the creation of the law creating the District and bringing Millwood to creation in order to bring industry into Southwest Arkansas. It would be interesting for people to know the history of how the lake came to be.—C.H., Texarkana, Texas
