Animal shelter

TO THE EDITOR:

The responsibility for the mess at the shelter lies at the doorstep of the people of Texarkana USA.

The shelter has been run poorly for years. Why? Because the shelter was forgotten, poorly funded, staffed by underpaid workers and volunteers (many from work release.)

Since the Texarkana Animal League gave up the impossible job of trying to run the shelter without the support it so desperately needed we have gone from one director to another on inadequate funding and abject abandonment by the powers at be. The rescue groups and the people that are on the front lines trying to save as many animal lives as possible are working tirelessly but its like putting Band-Aids on a stage four cancer.

I don't for one minute blame Connie and I am going to assume she did the best she could under the circumstances. When I went down there to pull dogs to transport them to no-kill shelters the look on her and Bertha's face was one of pure joy that we were getting the animals out of that hellhole. They always helped me get dogs to a place where they would be safe. The shelter never had the resources, and shame on us as a community for not taking better care of our domesticated dogs and cats. Texarkana USA is better than this and deserves better than this.

Let's make it better starting today.
