Doctor comes out of retirement to help save hospital
Every community has its heroes. People doing what they can to make things better for others. Ordinary folks who show that one person can make a real difference. In some cases a major difference. One such hero is Dr. Hiram Ward. The 81-year-old physician came out of retirement to help save Pike County Memorial Hospital in Murfreesboro, Ark. The hospital faced closure back in January because it had no attending physician. Since the building was constructed in 1958, minimum hospital standards have changed and Pike Countys doesnt meet them. Had the hospital shut down, it likely never would have reopened. Enter Dr. Ward. The good doctor had practiced medicine in Murfreesboro for more than 50 years before retiring, but volunteered to again take up the stethoscope when his community needed him. Dr. Wards wife also pitched in, helping out at the hospital office. Pike County Memorial is the second-largest employer in Murfreesboro and its loss would have a major impact on the communitys physical and financial health. Dr. Ward made a commitment years ago to the health and well-being of his patients and his community. That commitment is just as strong today. And the people of Murfreesboro are all the better for it.
