Attracting more retirees

TO THE EDITOR:

As someone who has retired to this area, I have some thoughts on the subject.

I have during the past few years made written suggestions to some businesses and elected officials on what myself and friends (those considering where to retire and at this time not Texarkana) consider important:

  • Patio/cottage homes close enough to walk to some businesses, i.e. grocery stores and the essential ones to seniors. We want to walk, not drive.
  • Entertainment in the afternoon so that we do not have to drive at night.
  • a discount at restaurants early in the afternoon, not necessary, but nice.
  • Some theaters even offer a free senior movie on certain mornings and this has been well-received in other areas of the U.S.

Perhaps a planned senior event in the mall with all businesses and organizations that offer services to seniors participating plus others that could be added, i.e., the biannual garage sale in the park. Some seniors traveling in their RVs set up at these events.

People could remember to invite newcomers in town to clubs, entertainment events and just out for coffee. Newcomers arent aware of many organizations and they have interests that you arent aware of until you share share and care.

The Four States Area already has several senior centers that perform extremely well with their limited spaces and budgets.

Why not combine many of the interesting events in the area? New Bostons Trade Days and Ashdown has wonderful Christmas Lights and other events.

    On Walter Reed

    TO THE EDITOR:

We have recently been told that Walter Reed Medical Hospital for Veterans is in deplorable condition. It is sad when our soldiers come home to inadequate care. Many thousands are arriving yearly from the war in Iraq.

As we know, our government spends money on outlandish programs and giveaways. It would be interesting to know how to stop this type of spending. Our veterans are in much need.

I have a question to the readers. How are the injured Iraqi people being cared for? There seem to be dozens of them hurt each day. Innocent people: men, women and children who are just trying to endure the war. I cant imagine them having any type of care in Iraq. We never hear about it in the news. Also I see few pictures of their hospitals and types of facilities that they have. I am just curious.
