Police in Wataugua, Texas, were in investigating area burglaries when they came calling Feb. 22 on a home in that Tarrant County city.
But while searching the home, they made a startling discovery. A video showing two teen-agers lighting marijuana cigarettes and forcing the children to inhale the smoke, then laughing and calling them names like ‘pot head as the little ones staggered about. One of the teens, age 17, was the uncle of the two boys, ages 2 and 5. He lived in the house with his grandmother and his sister, who is the boys mother. The other teen, 18, was his longtime friend. The boys mother said she was asleep in the back of the house when the video was made. But a womans voice is heard on the video. And someone else was there as well a 16-year-old who held the camera and shot the video. The two teens in the video are currently in custody, facing charges of injury to a child. The cameraman is in custody pending a hearing. The two children were taken from the home and placed in foster care by Child Protective Services. It had been hoped that a family member could be found, but the relatives contacted were unsuitable because of criminal records or other reasons. Relatives and friends of the accused teens tried to dismiss this as an isolated incident, a prank by two teens who were high on dope. But it turns out it wasnt an isolated incident. Test showed the two children had other illegal drugs in their system. Just what drugs were found in the boys system has not been released. But Child Protective Services officials are expected to make the test results known today during a custody hearing. It is also expected that the agency will recommend the two boys stay in foster care. This is one of those cases that both breaks the heart and angers the soul. Its terrible to think about any child growing up in such an environment. And its hard to imagine a punishment harsh enough for anyone who gives drugs to young children. One thing to be grateful for. At least the teen-agers were stupid enough to videotape their crimes. Without that evidence, its likely those two children would still be in that home, still be subject to that environment. |
