Sometimes there are no reasons for terrible events
![]() Old Isaac might have been a brilliant theorist, but he didnt consider human nature. When the action is a tragedy like the one that played out Monday at Virginia Tech, then the reactions are numerous and come from all angles. There are those who will try to explain what happened, to make sense of it all. Good luck. There are those who will tell us this is Gods will and we cant know his mind. Just be assured he has a higher purpose. Maybe thats comforting for some. Others will say its Satan, exercising his dominion over an evil earth. Since theyve likely learned their lesson, we probably will be spared Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell telling us this is Gods punishment for any variety of societal ills and sins, from abortion to homosexuality, high taxes to welfare. Those who subscribe to the ‘Law of Attraction as explained by the phenomenal DVD and book hit ‘The Secret might say the victims ‘attracted this by their mindsets. Others, myself included, simply believe there is no explanation for a sick mind on a rampage. It just is. Just as we have those who must try to explain, well have many who must find blame. Some will blame the university for not doing more. Apparently the killer had some real problems. Why wasnt something done? Im sure there will be a lot of questions directed at the university as more information comes to light. And officials have an obligation to answer fully and candidly. But we should all remember that in our society there are limits on what anyone can do to prevent a crime. Some will blame the police for not doing more. Every move made, every step taken or not taken will come under the microscope. And thats as it should be. Studying what happened that day may help the response to future situations. But truthfully, its hard to know what to do as horror unfolds around you. Especially when you have no real experience with the unthinkable and the unthinkable actually happens. And where there is blame, there are always those who believe someone must pay. And pay some more. Justice to these people always carries a dollar sign. Expect lawsuits. Is there anyone who doesnt believe the sharks are already schooling? Only these sharks smell money. Perhaps worst of all, well have those intent on twisting this tragedy to their own political purposes. Those opposed to private citizens owning firearms are already on the job. Every time there is a shooting death someone will call for more gun laws or even an all-out ban, forgetting, one supposes, exercising their First Amendments rights to try and get rid of the Second Amendment. The bigger the body count, the louder and more numerous the voices blaming it all on the weapon, rather than the hand that chose to use that weapon. But no better are those who came out within hours of the shootings to declare, with absolute certainty, that if the students and faculty had been armed then this wouldnt have happened. These are often the same people who like to puff up their fragile egos by saying things like, ‘Well, if I had been there and I had my gun ... Yeah, right. Go back home to your arsenal, action DVDs and ‘Soldier of Fiction magazine collection. Americans have the right to own guns. And guns arent bad or evil. Responsible gun owners have averted crimes or limited casualties. But neither the NRA nor its most ardent fans can claim the gift of prophecy. No one can say for sure what would have happened in any specific instance. And using this tragedy to push a pro-gun agenda is just as base as using those dead bodies to fuel a crusade to get rid of guns. Some will mourn these victims. Some will seek meaning. And others will use the blood spilled at Virginia Tech for their own agendas. But heres the bottom line. There are no reasons that make any sense. None. Such tragedies happen. They are conceived in sick minds and born in the blood of innocents. Theyve happened before. They will happen again. No matter how many people think they have the answer. |
