Letter to the EditorEditor’s Note; William F. Buckley’s column is unavailable today because he is ill.
TO THE EDITOR:
America, “land of the free and home of the brave,” has so many things going wrong now, it’sÊreally hard to pick one problem that’s worse than the others. Unpopular war, crooked and dishonest political leaders in both state and federal government, illegal immigration, grossly unfair medical costs, big business (probably 100% crooked) running our country because they have bought and paid for and own big politicians, crime, drugs, killing unborn babies, China’s unfair trade practices (hey, China will soon own the U.S. Treasury) global warming, price gouging, immorality, etc., etc.Êand etc. The list is almost endless and seems to be getting longer. What is disheartening to me is the fact that most of our serious problems (some listed above) are self-inflicted and could be resolved, if only the people in power and in charge would only do what is fair and right and enforce our present laws. Let me make a case in just one of our nations many problems. Immigration, and I’m not referring to the “legal” kind. America is losing, has already lost, control of our southern border. It has the potential of becoming another war zone like Iraq. On the south side of the border, even the honest (and they are few and far between) government officials are under attack by the crime element, the drug warlords. Recently in the Texarkana Gazette, there was a “cartoon” showing Americans, huge bullies with firearms and a pot of molten lead on a high rock wall trying to keep illegals from crossing the border. And down below was a poor pathetic looking family, man, woman and baby, looking up at the big bad bullies and saying, “Pardon, Senor, could you please direct us to the American Dream?” Hogwash. That “cartoon” has things reversed. It shows the border patrolmen as being bad and the lawbreakers as being good. All America has to do to stop illegal immigration is fine the snot out of the people that employ them. Make it more profitable to NOT hire them. That’s what it is all about, the almighty dollar. But that is never going to happen, at least in our lifetimes. Unless the silent majority (maybe not majority for long) starts getting involved and demanding our big boys in Washington start enforcing the laws we already have, the problem will worsen to gigantic proportions. Sound like doom and gloom? Well, folks, it’s fact, it has happened, it’s now happening, and it’s going to get much worse, unless we the people get the big boys in Washington under control and force them to enforce our laws that are already in place. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. God bless America, we need all the help He can give us. Roy Bale Linden, Texas Column defies scripture TO THE EDITOR: Bill Maxwell’s recent article, “Moving toward a more inclusive faith,” can be added to all of man’s previous efforts to change the gospel of Jesus Christ from its primary focus on the spiritual needs of mankind to a mission that is more appealing to man’s physical desires. The more liberal Christian leaders and their denominations are already converting to this “social gospel.” Maxwell hopes that the influence of Christians that have resisted this perversion of the true gospel will be totally replaced by this politically correct social gospel. While hoping past conservative Christian involvement in government is coming to an end, he appears to want a blending of government and church to form a socialist-type welfare state. For this to work as he envisions, Christians must abandon scriptural admonitions against such things as homosexuality and abortion so they can be more “inclusive.” What Christians should understand first and foremost is this “social gospel” is another deceptive replacement of the true gospel. The very core of the gospel of Jesus Christ is His coming to earth to provide a remedy for a sin condition that all mankind has. Our sin, unforgiven, will separate us from God for eternity. The only remedy acceptable to God was for Someone without sin to suffer in our place, which Jesus did, on the cross. If the world rejects this and seeks to remedy man’s problems by working to provide material abundance, perfect health and world peace, it will have neither. God is the provider of all these blessings. If you spurn His Son and distort the words of His scripture, your good fortune, at best, will be temporary. Spurning God’s demand that we be obedient to His Word and yet still expect His blessing is futile. If we reject the true gospel today, will God be more merciful to us? Derrell Murphy Texarkana, Ark. Thought on letter TO THE EDITOR: To add another thought to Ted Thamert’s letter of Tuesday, June 5. It has concerned me since a person was charged with murder because his car hit a pregnant woman’s car and she lost her baby because of it. So why is it not murder for a doctor, whose profession is to try to save lives, to do a “partial birth” killing? As to the high court judges, it seems a lot of them are pro-anything immoral without too much concern for the average citizen. A.M. Horton Texarkana, Texas |
