UTEP takes C-USA crown

The University of Texas-El Paso rode the strength of its' comeback in Tuesday's 36 holes of stroke play to take the top seed into the 4-team match play and emerged the champions of the Conference USA men's golf tournament Tuesday at Texarkana Country Club.

The Miners defeated Southern Mississippi, 4-1, in the semifinals and then downed UNC-Charlotte, 4-1, in the championship match. Charlotte had topped North Texas, 3-0-2, in the other semifinal.

Andreas Sorenson of UTEP defeated individual medalist Seth Gandy of Charlotte, 1 and 2, in their final match. Other wins for the Miners included, Frederik Dreier over John Gough, 2-up; Charles Corner over Matty Lamb, 2-up, and Nicklas Pihl over Conor Purcell, 2-up. Charlotte's only win was Tyler Young topping Aaron Terrazas, 1-up.

In the Miners' semifinal victory over Southern Miss, Pihl won 3 and 2 over Walker Kesterson. Terrazas bested Matt Codd, 1 and 1, and Corner and Sorenson defeated Matt Lorez and Derick Kelting, 1-up each. Southern Mississippi's Ryan Argotsinger topped Dreier, 5 and 4.

In Charlotte's win over North Texas, Young won 3 and 2 over Cory Churchman, Purcell beat Ian Snyman, 2-up, and Lamb edged Andrew Hudson, 1-up. Gough against Thomas Rosenmueller and Gandy against Devin Jackson were all-square through 18.

Texas-El Paso receives an automatic berth to the NCAA regional tournament held May 15-17, and is the first trip for the Miners to the national tournament since 2006.
