THS boys suffer first loss of season

Texas High's boys unbeaten streak came to a halt, and THS and Ashdown split varsity decisions Tuesday at Tiger Center.

Ashdown's boys edged the Tigers, 45-43, to open the Panthers' season.

The Lady Tigers survived a furious rally by the Lady Panthers in the second half of a 53-48 Texas High victory.

Ashdown's girls play in the New Boston Gunslinger tournament Thursday, Texas High's girls travel to Brownsboro for the Great East Texas Shootout, and THS' boys will compete in the Greenville tournament starting Thursday.

 

Boys

It was a nip-and-tuck affair, with no team building more than a 6-point lead, which the Tigers held at the end of the first quarter.

Ashdown tied the game quickly in the second and then took a 23-20 lead. The Panthers were up 26-22 at intermission, but the Tigers knotted the score early in the third quarter at 26, again at 28 and, after taking a brief lead at 30-29, tied the score at 33 and 35.

Lavon Brown's 3-pointer made it 38-37 Texas High with 6:29 left, but Jaden Hill tied the game with one of his game-high 13 points for Ashdown (1-0).

Texas High's JaNiro Lane had a jumper from the corner and answered Austin Cross' 3-pointer with three of his own to tie the game at 43 with 2:24, but Hill hit a floater off the glass on the next possession and the Tigers' couldn't get a shot to fall to tie the game again.

Lane led Texas High (4-1) with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Cross added eight points for Ashdown, which shot 16 of 41 from the floor for 39 percent. The Panthers also held a 47-29 advantage on the glass, Cross, Malik Winfrey and Brandon Northcross pulling down nine boards each.

The Tigers were 28.3 percent on 17 of 60 shooting. Texas High also forced 21 turnovers and committed 12, but were just 4 of 7 from the foul line. Ashdown shot 12 of 23 from the charity stripe.

In the junior varsity game, Texas High won 60-23. Elias Thurman had 12, and Chris Reid added 11. Chris Scroggins had six for Ashdown.

Girls

Searching for their first victory of the year, the Lady Panthers faced a 15-point deficit at intermission but limited Texas High to just four points in the third quarter to cut the lead to eight by the fourth quarter.

The score got as close as six before Mia Wilson buried one of her four 3-pointers for the Lady Tigers (6-3) during a 5-point swing, and the 11-point lead with 1:15 left was more than Ashdown could overcome. The Panthers (0-4) scored the final six points, including Shacoya Poole's layup at the buzzer.

Ashdown had runs of 7-0 and 13-3 during the second-half rally, but the Tigers opened the game on a 10-0 run. and led 18-8 with 52 seconds left in the first on a Wilson trey. Wilson scored 14 points, and Blaire Bledsoe and Porter added nine apiece.

Poole and Brittany Harris led the Panthers with 11 points each, Harris scoring all of hers in the second half and Poole pouring in eight of hers after halftime. Harris pulled down nine rebounds, and Elizabeth Fields had eight boards.

Ashdown held a 37-32 advantage in rebounding but had 25 turnovers compared to Texas High's 18 turnovers.

Texas High shot 44 percent from the field on 19 of 43 shooting, and the Panthers made 19 of 45 for 42 percent shooting.
