Tradition is in the heart of Arkansas High football.

Senior Peyton Watson, who plays defensive end and linebacker, respects the Razorback tradition and wants to leave his mark on the storied football program.

The Hogs' mantra is Ride for the Brand, and it ties into the history of Razorback football.

"Arkansas High has a great history of football and sports in general," Watson said. "We have a great brand and we want to keep the good tradition going."

Watson's personal goal in football is to be an all-state selection and to have 80 or more tackles. His goal for the team is to win a state championship.

"I want to win that trophy," Watson said. "I think we have the talent and potential to win a lot of regular season games and after that we have to go through playoffs and keep on fighting."

As a leader, Watson said that he has to make sure his teammates do everything right. Watson said that some players are reluctant to attend evening practices, and he helps motivate those players to come.

The workouts have been long and, at times, daunting in the hot summer sun. Watson and the rest of the team keep grinding it out.

"We've been working hard," he said. "I haven't missed a day, and everyone has been coming. We've been running, going through drills and hitting the weights. The coaches are going to make sure that we are conditioned."

At times before a game, Watson listens to rap music and his favorite artists are Gucci Mane and Migos. Eventually Watson turns off the music and focuses on his duties on the football field.

"I'll write down notes of what I should do-the keys to what I need to do-so that I can help the team out," he said. "I want to make sure I have that tone and focus."

Watson gives credit to God, his family, coaches, and teammates for his success in football and in life.

If there wasn't football on Friday Watson said he would be spending time with friends. His hobbies include playing other sports like basketball, listening to music and reading local news.

Watson was born for the physicality of football and is a great team player. He said that strength and speed are the best skills to have at defensive end. Mobility and flexibility are also important.

"I love contact," Watson said. "I love tackling too; that is my favorite part about football. I'll drop back in coverage and stay on somebody or I'll rush the quarterback. I'll do whatever the team needs me to do. Football has changed my life. It has made me work harder."
