B-ball tourney begins with big bangs

SIMMS, Texas-Six blowouts and two nail-biters highlighted the opening day of the James Bowie Classic basketball tournament Thursday.

Redwater cruised past Union Hill 41-18, and Pleasant Grove's junior varsity defeated Union Hill 37-22 in first round girls' games.

Hooks defeated Pleasant Grove's junior varsity 63-40, and Fouke handled James Bowie 58-9 in the two late girls' games.

In early boys action, James Bowie edged Bloomburg 31-28, and Cushing ran past Redwater 50-29.

Cushing beat Bloomburg 44-19, and Atlanta's junior varsity nipped James Bowie 38-36 in the late boys' games.

The high scorers on the girls' side were Pleasant Grove junior varsity's Phoebe Robertson and Redwater's Karlee Carmony, who had 17 points each.

James Bowie's Cody Roberson was the boys' top scorer with 18 points.

Today's action begins with Redwater's gilrs facing Pleasant Grove's junior varsity at 9 a.m., followed by Atlanta's junior varsity and Cushing boys at 10:30. Hooks takes on Bloomburg girls at noon, and Bloomburg plays Redwater boys at 1:30.

James Bowie faces Bloomburg girls at 3, and Redwater clashes with Atlanta's junior varsity boys at 4:30. Fouke goes up against Redwater girls at 6, and James Bowie and Cushing boys play the closer at 7:30 p.m.

 

Girls

Redwater 41, Union Hill 22

Carmony scored a game-high 17 points as Redwater blew past Union Hill in the tournament opener for both teams.

Karli Boatright hit four treys and finished with 14 points for the Lady Dragons.

The Lady Bulldogs' Josie Heflin, Brandy Jackson, and Lizbeth Aguillon scored four points each.

 

Pleasant Grove JV 37, Union Hill 22

Robertson poured in 17 points, and Pleasant Grove's junior varsity rolled by Union Hill.

The Lady Hawks took a 18-7 halftime lead and stayed on top the rest of the game.

Hannah Campbell had eight points for the Lady Bulldogs.

 

Hooks 63, Pleasant Grove JV 40

Korey Brooks led all scorers with 16 points, and the more experienced Lady Hornets squad defeated the Lady Hawks.

Brandi Hout popped in 11 points for Hooks.

Robertson nailed down 13 points for Pleasant Grove's junior varsity.

 

Fouke 58, James Bowie 9

Crysta Larey poured in 15 points, and the Lady Panthers coasted to victory over the Lady Pirates.

Fouke jumped out to a 22-1 first quarter lead and led by 27 at the half.

Ravyn Hillis and Ashley Shaw had three points apiece for James Bowie.

 

Boys

James Bowie 31, Bloomburg 28

Roberson led the Pirates with nine points as they outlasted the Wildcats in the tournament opener for both teams.

Jordan Clayton had a game-high 13 points for Bloomburg, while teammate Hunter Garrett helped out with 10.

 

Cushing 50, Redwater 29

Austin Davis swished in 17 points as the Bearkats flew past the Dragons. Diangelo Blakemore had 10 points, including two shots from 3-point land for Cushing.

Kholeton Cox paced Redwater with seven points.

 

Cushing 44, Bloomburg 19

Brandon Wilson and Bryan Austin scored 14 points each as the Bearkats sailed past the Wildcats.

Cushing outscored Bloomburg in each quarter and never trailed.

Clayton paced the Wildcats with 10 points.

 

Atlanta JV 38, James Bowie 36

In the best game of the day, the Rabbits' junior varsity edged the Pirates in the closing seconds.

After Atlanta took a 24-13 lead at the half, James Bowie rallied back and cut the deficit to three points, 36-33, with 53 seconds left in the game.

The Pirates inched to within 36-35 with 37 seconds left, and Roberson, who finished with a game-high 18 points, drove the lane and was fouled.

Roberson tied the game at 36-all with 21 seconds left.

The Rabbits' Kylan Carter knocked down a 16-foot jump shot with seven seconds left to give Atlanta a two-point lead.

James Bowie got the ball down court but failed to get off a shot.

Carter finished with a team-high 14 points.
