AHS wins Gunslinger tourney: Razorbacks' Oliver sinks five 3-pointers, scores 36 points

NEW BOSTON, Texas-There was no second-guessing the champions of the 2016 Gunslinger Shootout.
Arkansas High's boys led wire-to-wire in routing Idabel Saturday at New Boston High School, 75-38.
The visiting Oklahoma fans were celebrating after the girls' title game, which Idabel won over Ashdown, 58-39.
Hope's boys took home the third place trophy in defeating Texas High's junior varsity, 72-46. Pleasant Grove's girls finished third, whipping Liberty-Eylau, 48-39.
Consolation trophies were won by Paris' boys and Arkansas High's girls.

Boys Division
Championship

Arkansas High 75,
Idabel 38
The Razorbacks (5-1) made few mistakes in easily winning the boys crown.
Taviron Oliver buried five treys and scored a game-high 36 points to nearly outscore Idabel by himself. Oliver and teammates Kyndal Martin and Johnny Gullatt were the Hogs' all-tournament selections.
AHS scored the game's first five points and never trailed, building a 42-16 cushion at intermission.
Idabel (5-2) scored the first eight points in the third quarter, but the Razorbacks answered with a 10-0 run of their own to turn the contest into a rout.
The Warriors were led by all-tournament pick Tyrig French with 14 points. His teammate Tyrone Howell also made the elite team.

Third place

Hope 72, Texas High JV 46
Texas High's hot-shooting junior varsity finally went cold from the field Saturday.
The Tigers also had trouble matching up with Hope's superior height.
T.D. Walton and Markel Haynie both scored 20 points and Desmond McDonald added 18 with Keith Brown contributing 10 for the Bobcats.
Unbeaten coming into the tournament, Texas High fell to 4-3 on the season. Quechez Clark led the Tigers with 18 points, including four treys.
The Bobcats led 35-26 at halftime, blowing past Texas High in the third quarter when they outscored the Tigers, 22-9.
Hope's McDonald and the Tigers' Clark were on the all-tournament team.

Consolation

Paris 62, Daingerfield 36
The Wildcats proved Saturday that they can win without junior Josh Robinson, who was averaging 35 points per game coming into the tournament. He was pulled early in the first quarter and did not return.
Sam Hawkes picked up Paris' offense with seven treys for 21 points. Jalen Pipkins led all scorers with 30 points for the Wildcats (8-1) He was selected to the all-tournament squad.
Daingerfield (1-5) was led by Reggie Jeter's 12 points. Micah Reeves was on the all-tournament team.

Seventh place

PG 73, New Boston 50
Pleasant Grove rebounded from Thursday's opening round loss to win its last two by dominating the host Lions.
The Hawks led 16-5 at the first break and New Boston could never get closer.
Aaron Harmon paced PG's attack with 19 points, with Connor Ouellette pouring in 18 and Cory Jones 11.
Dantray Copeland led New Boston with 15 points. Deaundre Robinson scored 11 and Colby McElwee added 10.
Ouellette represented the Hawks on the all-tournament team.

Girls Division
Championship

Idabel 58, Ashdown 39
Six-footer Shiyou Smith dominated the paint, scoring, rebounding and blocking shots as the Lady Warriors remained unbeaten (7-0).
The contest was competitive until the final minute of the second quarter with Idabel nursing a 25-23 lead. It was 29-24 at intermission, the Warriors starting the second half with a 7-0 run to take control.
Stevesha Cursh had 10 for the winners, while Cambre McCullough poured in 20 points for the Lady Panthers. Adaysia Thompson added 10 for Ashdown (3-5).
Smith, Cursh and Tearsney Grayson were all-tournament selections. Ashdown was represented by McCullough and Thompson.

Third Place

Pleasant Grove 48, L-E 39
Poor free-throw shooting was the only thing that kept the Lady Hawks from pulling away from L-E.
Pleasant Grove converted 9 of 25 from the charity stripe, giving the Lady Leopards an opportunity to rally in the final quarter.
L-E rallied from 12 down to one point, but the Hawks answered with their own run behind Madeline Haak's 15 points. Taylor Crabtree led the Leopards with 13 points and Eliyah Howard contributed 12.
The Hawks improve to 8-4 with the win, while L-E falls to 9-6.
PG's Sha'Nequa Henry and L-E's Howard were named to the all-tournament team.

Consolation

Arkansas High 48, Hope 33
The Lady Backs outscored Hope in every quarter and steadily pulled away.
Tierra Holliman, an all-tournament pick, swished three treys and led all scorers with 22 points for AHS.
Hope was led by Courtney Davis' 15 points, while Raley Potter contributed 13. Potter was selected to the all-tournament team.

Seventh place

New Boston 70, L-E JV 36
All-tournament pick Madison Thomas tallied 15 points and Hannah White added 11 in leading New Boston past Liberty-Eylau's junior varsity.
The Lady Lions' lead was 37-25 at halftime and it never got closer.
Kenkeydra Threats paced the Leopards with 10 points.
