Area track and field competitors qualify for state championship meets in Austin

During Saturday's regional track and field meets, Northeast Texas qualified several to the state championships meets held May 12-14 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
The top two finishers in each event at the regional meet advance to the state meet for their respective classification.
Texas High's Hannah Higgins was second in the discus with a toss of 138-3 at the Region II-5A meet in Arlington.
At Commerce in the Region II-4A meet, Atlanta's Teshuna Sheppard won the triple jump at 40-8 3/4, and Liberty-Eylau's girls 4x400 relay won in 3:57.60.
On the boys side, Atlanta's 4x100 relay team won in 41.96 and the 4x200 relay team won in 1:27.54. L-E's Denzel Green took gold in the long jump (6-4) and triple jump (46-8)
Daingerfield's Denver Mims won the girls 200 meters in 25.03 at the Region II-3A meet. The Tiger boys 4x100 relay team finished in 43.15 for first place, and Ricky Lee was runner-up in the discus at 142-8.
Hooks' Korie Brooks qualified for state in the discus (117-7) and shot put (39-3), and Linden-Kildare's Dominique Sauer also was a double state qualifier in the high jump (5-6) and 100-meter hurdles (15.59).
In Class 2A, Clarksville's Clashon Gaffney won the long jump (21-9) and the triple jump (46-5). Lavonte Edwards was runner-up in the long jump at 20-9.
Tre Scales was second in the 200 meters in 22.42, Edwards was second in the 110 hurdles in 15.59, and Keshon Moore won the 300 hurdles in 39.58. The Blue Tigers' 4x200 relay team also advanced with a second-place 1:31.13.
For James Bowie's girls, Kaitlyn Sweatman won the 1,600 (5:22.86) and 3,200 meters (11:45.30).
Maud's Kendall Mathis won the boys shot put at 43-0.
For McLeod, Bradley Lambeth and was runner-up in the 1,600 meters (4:39.88), and he finished third in 3,200 meters. J. R. Smith broke the school record with a first-place toss of 155-9 in the discus.
