City, area teams will begin state playoffs this week

Seven softball teams and 11 baseball teams will participate in the UIL state playoffs this week, the area round for softball and bi-district for baseball.
Pleasant Grove, the defending Region II-4A softball champion, plays Ferris in a best-of-three series at LeTourneau University in Longview. Games 1 and 2 are scheduled for Friday, starting at 4 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Atlanta takes on Van in a softball game at 7 p.m. Friday at Marshall's Lady Mav Field.
Hooks tangles with Commerce in a series at Northeast Texas Community College with two games Friday. The opener is set for 4 p.m., and Game 2 is at 8 p.m., approximately. A third game, should the teams split, will be played at 10 a.m. Saturday.
DeKalb vs. Tom Bean will be a best-of-three series at Greenville High School. The opener is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday, and the series continues at 3 p.m. Saturday, with two games if necessary.
Avery plays Hawkins in a single game for an area crown. That game is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Northeast Texas Community College, between the Hooks-Commerce games.
Redwater takes on Lone Oak, but no details were available, and Hughes Springs plays Van Alstyne in a series Friday and Saturday, but the site and time were not determined Monday night.
In the baseball postseason, Texas High hosts Whitehouse in Game 1 of their 5A bi-district series at 7 p.m. Friday. The series moves to Whitehouse for Game 2 at 1 p.m. Saturday, and a third game, if needed.
Pleasant Grove will play later this week, but the fourth-place team from District 16 had yet to be determined Monday night.
In the 3A playoffs, Redwater and Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill play a home-and-home series with the opener at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Game 2 is at noon Saturday at Chapel Hill, with a third game to follow, if needed.
Hughes Springs and New Boston meet at 6 p.m. Friday in their opener, and Game 2 will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The third game, if needed, will follow at Lion Field.
Hooks awaited seeding games out of District 16-3A to determine its opponent. Linden-Kildare and Queen City were facing Chapel Hill and Mount Vernon, respectively, to sort out the playoff seeds.
In the 2A baseball playoffs, Maud plays two games Friday against Sulphur Bluff at Mount Pleasant High School starting at 6 p.m. If a third game is needed, it is scheduled for noon Saturday back at MP.
James Bowie and Como-Pickton play a series at Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill. Two games are slated for Friday at 5:30 p.m., and a third game will be played Saturday.
Avery faces Cumby at 7 p.m. Friday at Prairiland to determine the bi-district winner.
