Workers from Sweetser Construction in Fayetteville prepare for concrete to be poured Oct. 14 as a part of work along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Interstate 540 in Fayetteville. A special election is set for Nov. 8 for the proposed 2011 Interstate Rehabilitation Program, which would repair interstates across Arkansas and upgrade nine interchanges in Washington and Benton counties. Early voting begins Tuesday.

Dunn should compete for immediate playing time with Labette, which plays in the Kansas Jayhawk Conference, which last year produced three All-America players and two top-5 teams, including national JC champion, Kansas City.

"She's worked very hard the three years I've coached her," said L-E girls basketball coach Aquanetta Watson, the Gazette's Coach of the Year. "She's one you don't have to call to come down to the gym. She'll call you and say, 'Hey, can you open the gym for me?'

"She's a great student of the game, a great student in the classroom."

Dunn excelled at playing inside and outside rolls for the Lady Leopards. She averaged 17.7 points and 10 rebounds per game for the District 15-4A championship team this year.

Hard work and good grades run in the family. The daughter of Chris and Latasha Dunn, Lakena has a 3.5 average. Her brother, Dalvin, a graduate of Texarkana College, is a senior and on the President's List at Prairiview University. He plans to attend law school.

"She was always special, always around, always helping others," said her mother.
