Standing in the way of the Lady Hornets this week is Tom Bean. Hooks (27-3) and the Lady Tomcats (18-3) will play a best-of-three Region II-3A quarterfinal series at Mineola High School.

Game 1 is set for 7 p.m. today, and the second game will be played at 4 p.m. Saturday. A third game will be held after the completion of Game 2, if needed.

"Tom Bean has a pretty good quality pitcher, pretty similar to Marena's style, so we feel comfortable with that," Hooks coach Neal Kiser said. "They've got a lot of speed, a lot of slappers. They're pretty athletic, but by comparison with some of the other teams, I think we'll match up with them well. I think we'll be OK. For the most part, I think we're playing some of our best; we're peaking at the right time."

Sophomore left-hander Marena Estell allowed just nine hits in two games last week as Hooks swept Commerce. Calyn Kyles is her battery mate behind the plate.

Kaylee Pope will be at first base, Sidney Pardue at second, Kenley Kyles at shortstop and Kiser will have to fill in, at least for the opener, for regular third baseman Korie Brooks, who is competing in the state track and field meet in Austin.

The outfield features Tori Foster in left, Brandi Hout in center field and Haley Krieger in right. Rachel Latimer is the designated player.

"Our bats are better than they've been all year, and we've been consistent throughout the lineup," Kiser said. "Marena's pitching is as good as it has been all year. We're right where we need to be at this point. It's been several, several years since Hooks has been this deep in the playoffs. We're using this as a starting point to make a little history.

"We're telling the girls to enjoy the ride, enjoy the experience. We just need to take it one day at a time."

The series winner plays either Howe or Peaster in the regional semifinals next week.
