Lady Tigers look to play fast against Highland Park

WILLS POINT, Texas-Texas High begins its trek into the Class 5A playoffs today.
The Lady Tigers (19-16) clash with Highland Park (27-6) as the second match of a 5A bi-district doubleheader. Pine Tree at Lucas Lovejoy play at 6 p.m., and THS and the Scots meet at 8 p.m. at Wills Point High School.
"Highland Park has a really good outside hitter (Jordan Westendorff), and they're very good on front row and back row," Tiger coach Melissa Hardy said. "They're consistent hitters and consistent passers, but I see some things we can take advantage of if we pass well. We want to run a fast offense because they don't seem to handle the fast offense very well."
Takeba Dowden is the lone senior for the young Texas High roster.
Kaitlyn Cross is the other middle blocker for the Tigers, opposite Dowden. Treyaunna Rush will provide firepower from the outside as a sophomore hitter, Katelyn Jordan is the setter in the 5-1, and Vicki Willis is the libero. Cross, Rush, Jordan and Willis, among several others, are sophomores. Olivia Lower is a freshman starter who plays all the way around.
Mia Wilson will help on the back row, as will Baylie Graves. Unique McBride adds a hitter on the outside.
"I wouldn't say that they've come together as I would've like them to," Hardy said. "They're a young team. They've grown a lot as it relates to volleyball and their skills. But remaining focused is something we're really working on, and that comes with maturity. They have come a long way from the beginning of the season, and I'm proud of that."
The Texas High-HP winner advances to the area round to play either Prosper or Frisco Liberty.
