Queen City, Hooks claim wins

QUEEN CITY, Texas-Queen City and Hooks cruised in their opening wins of the International Paper Pineywoods Tournament Thursday at Eugene Sloan Memorial Gym.

The host Lady Bulldogs beat Maud, 45-26, with Jessica Jones ripping the nets for 28 points. Bri Hemby led the Lady Cards with eight points.

Brandi Hout scored 13 points to lead the Lady Hornets to a 53-19 win over Marshall. Hooks and Queen City clash at 6 p.m. today.

In other first-round games, Hughes Springs beat Texas High junior varsity, 45-10; Hooks also beat Longview 9th grade, 61-38; Longview JV topped Elysian Fields, 44-27, and Marshall, 46-40; and McLeod bested Hughes Springs, 55-30.

Hout led the Hornets over Longview's freshmen with 14 points.

Tessa Glenn led McLeod with 18 points in the win over Hughes Springs, which got six points from Kaitlyn Roth. Roth scored 19 in the win over THS' junior varsity. Sedaya Finley had 10 for the Lady Tigers.

Today's action begins with Texas High's jayvee against Maud at 9 a.m. Hughes Springs and Elysian Fields clash at 10:30, the winners the morning games play at noon. At 1:30 p.m. Longview's 9th grade plays Marshall's JV, and McLeod faces Longview JV at 3. Marshall awaits the winner of the 1:30 game at 4:30, and Queen City and Hooks meet in the finale.

 

Lady Lions split games

MOUNT VERNON, Texas-Mount Pleasant doubled-up New Boston in varsity girls' hoops at the Belt Buster Tournament, 55-25.

Shakyra Hutchins led all scorers with her 19 buckets. Morgan Martin also crossed double-digits, dropping 12 points for MP.

The Lady Lions were led by an eight point performance by Chloe Davis.

New Boston slid by Harmony, 46-41.

Hailey Nero and McKenzee Thomas each dropped 10 points for the Lady Lions squad.

Katie Seaborn poured in 18 points for Harmony. Lexi Miller dropped 10 points for Harmony's
squad.

New Boston takes on Brownsboro today in the Belt Buster Tournament.

 

Bloomburg 37, New Diana 33

NEW DIANA, Texas-Bloomburg used a balanced attack to move past host New Diana in the first round of the New Diana tournament.

Halee Campbell scored 10 for the Lady Wildcats, and Trinity Mouser added nine points.

Makayla Christy had 20 points for the Lady Eagles.

Bloomburg faces Paul Pewitt at 6 p.m. today.

McLeod 49, Como-Pickton 31

GLADEWATER, Texas-McLeod man-handled Como-Pickton in the opening game of the Union Grove varsity boys' basketball tournament.

JR Smith led the offensive rout with his game-high 24 buckets. Teammate Colby Smith drained two threes on his way to a 10 point night. Zach Prince also banged in seven points for McLeod.

McLeod continued its dominance steamrolling Harleton, 52-31.

JR Smith kept his hot-hand rolling, dropping 17 points before the final whistle. Colby Smith followed suit, scoring 16 points for the Longhorns.

McLeod is unblemished during the infant 2016-2017 season.

 

Subvarsity

PG JV girls' fall

MOUNT VERNON, Texas-Pleasant Grove junior varsity girls' fell to North Lamar, 26-19.

Don'Teshia Mixon led the Lady Hawks junior varsity hoop squad with nine points.

Mount Pleasant's junior varsity girls' slipped past PG, 37-34.

Mixon again led the Lady Hawks with nine points. Teammate Phoebe Robertson poured in eight points for PG.

 

North Heights handles Hope

North Heights beat Hope in 8th grade boys' hoops action, 44-20.

The Hogs were led by Josh Taylor and Eric Flowers. Both had the hot hand for the Hogs, dropping in 12 buckets each.

The Hogs are 1-1 on the season and will not be in action again until after Thanksgiving, competing in the Blevins Tournament.

The 7th grade Hogs' squad beat Hope, 38-20.

Rickie Williams and Mason Cornelius led the Razorbacks in scoring. Both Hog wing-men dropped 11 points for the night.

The Hogs take on Lafayette County on December 5. North Heights is 2-1 for the season.

 

Genoa Central Tournament

GENOA, Ark.-Fouke defeated Spring Hill in the Genoa Central Junior Varsity Girls' Tournament, 37-35.

Fouke's Taylor Hardin, led all scorers with her game-high 23 points. Jada Quillen dropped eight points for Spring Hill.

Genoa Central bottled up Taylor in junior varsity girls' action, 39-8.

Hailey Wylie led the Lady Dragons with 10 points. Rozie Goodner led Taylor's attack with three
points.

Genoa Central and Fouke will square off in the Championship Game at 12:00 on Saturday.

Spring Hill edged out Genoa Central in junior varsity boys' hoop action, 29-28.

Alex Woodle dropped 17 points for the Dragons. Dawson Calhoun led Spring Hill in scoring, pouring in 10 points for the game.

Lafayette County throttled Taylor in the Genoa Central junior varsity Tournament, 47-23.

Issac Sosser led Lafayette County's scoring attack with 12 points. Alex Dawson led all scorers, dropping 17 points for the game.

Spring Hill and Lafayette County will square off in the finals of the Genoa Central Tournament Saturday at 1:10 p.m.

 

Hogs battle Hope

HOPE, Ark.-Arkansas High fell to Hope in a 9th grade girls' heartbreaker, 31-28.

Journee Williams continued leading the Lady Backs in scoring, dropping 10 points for the night. Fourtunate Barry poured in nine points for the Hogs.

The 9th grade Lady Backs are 1-3 overall.

North Heights throttled Hope, 36-10.

Millie Henderson drained 10 buckets for the Lady Backs. Teammate Bryunna Brewer dropped eight points for AHS.

The 8th grade Hogs are 2-0 for the year.

The 7th grade Hogs girls' squad followed suit bottling up Hope, 23-5.

Larnya Solomon led all scorers with her 11 points performance. Jamyia Montgomery contributed six points for the Hogs.

North Heights 7th grade girls' squad is 2-1 on the season.

 

Avery, Rivercrest split

AVERY, Texas-Rivercrest beat Avery in 8th grade girls' hoops double-overtime thriller, 38-37.

Maggie Taylor scored a career high 28 points for her Avery squad.

Avery's 7th grade girls' team rolled Rivercrest, 14-8.

Sara Dean led Avery with five
points.
