Prescott upsets No. 1 Glen Rose

PRESCOTT, Ark.-It was a fierce defensive trial for Prescott, an aggressively offensive team, Friday as the No. 3 Curley Wolves overcame No. 1-ranked Glen Rose, 20-17 in a Conference 5-3A showdown.

A decisive moment in the last 14 seconds of the game pushed Prescott over the top.

Aaron Weatherford for Glen Rose got the ball rolling in the first, scoring on an 11-yard run. Alaric Chavez kicked the PAT to put the Beavers up 7-0 early.

Chavez tacked on a field goal in the second with 3:54 to play in the half, and the Beavers led, 10-0 .

The Curley Wolves squeezed their first score into the waning seconds of the first half, an 8-yard hook up, Carlos Vanhook from Derrick Flynn. The 2-point pass failed and the half ended with the Beavers on top 10-6.

In the fourth, Flynn pushed into the end-zone for a 3-yard TD run. The PAT failed, but Prescott was now up by two with 11:05 left in the game.

Glen Rose's Seth David answered the call with a 13-yard dash for six. Chavez's kick gave the lead back to the Beavers, 17-12.

Prescott's defense was able to force a four-and-out in the closing minutes of the game and at 2:49 they started a 32-yard, eight-play drive towards the end-zone. The seventh play of the drive left the Curley Wolves five yards away from remaining undefeated.

It was the eighth play that allowed them to retain their perfect record as Flynn hammered his way across the goal line for a 4-yard TD. Laroderick Walker's 2-point run was the cherry on the cake as Prescott rose to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference and Glen rose slipped to 6-1, 3-1.

 

Genoa 15, Drew Central 14

MONTICELLO, Ark.- Genoa Central's varsity football team made school history Friday night, setting a new record for most victories in a season (4). After remaining scoreless the first three quarters, the Dragons pulled a win out of the hat defeating Drew Central 15-14 in this 6-3A conference game.

Genoa Central (4-3, 1-3) was led by quarterback Tyler Moreland who carried the ball 15 times for 141 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The hosting Pirates (0-7, 0-4) scored initially with one second left in the half, a 4-yard run by Montiel Daniel, giving them a six point edge going into halftime after the failed run.

In the third Drew Central added another TD after Zeb Trantham scooped up a fumble and ran it back 40 yards into the end-zone. Daniels added a 2-point run to put the Pirates up 14-0 with only one stanza left to play.

The Dragons first touchdown came with 6:44 left in the game as Moreland scampered in from 20 yards out to bring his team to within eight. Genoa Central decided to risk it with a 2-point run by Moreland, and after he plowed his way past the Drew Central defensive line his team was only down by six.

The final score that tipped the game to its ultimate conclusion happened three minutes later as Moreland once more plunged into the masses for a 4-yard touchdown run. The PAT, sent by Aaron Barwick, was the means of the final push of the Dragons drive, moving them from dead even with the Pirates to a victory and a new school record for their team.

 

Horatio 43, Bismarck 6

BISMARCK, Ark.-Horatio's Zach Izzo passed for 144 yards and three touchdowns and returned an interception for a touchdown and Theo Ramsey rushed for 84 yards and two more scores to ignite the visiting Lions to the District 5-3A victory over winless Bismarck.

Horatio goes to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in district while the host Lions tumble to 0-7, 0-4.

Horatio, which never trailed, led 14-6 at halftime but pulled away by outscoring the hosts 29-0 in the second half.

Izzo completed 8-of-13 passes, with all three touchdowns going to Taylor Chavez covering (25, 19 and 53 yards). He also made one of three interceptions and returned it for the game's final TD with 3:28 remaining. Pedro Ruvalcaba kicked his fifth extra point of the night for the final score.

Ramsey carried the ball 10 times and scored on runs of 30 and 20 yards. Zaire User also scored a safety for Horatio when he recovered a fumble in the Bismarck end zone.

Horatio finished with 469 yards total offense, including 325 on the ground while Bismarck had 276, including 188 rushing. Horatio's defense recorded four turnovers while the hosts had two.

 

Mount Ida 34, Foreman 33

FOREMAN, Ark.-Second-ranked Mount Ida survived a surging Foreman team to remain unbeaten on the season in a key 7-2A victory.

Tucker Hall ran for a score for the Gators (5-2, 3-1) and threw two more-both in the fourth quarter when the lead changed twice.

Kyren Beaty also had a 26-yard scoring run for Foreman, which ran for 475 yards on the night, and Corey Lovewell added a 4-yard TD run in the third to tie the game at 20 with 3:36 left in the third.

The Lions (7-0, 4-0) rushed for 424 yards, and Gage Dyer and Jonathan Lagrand scored twice each.

Hall connected with Sam Gamble (11 yards) and C.J. Green (27) during the fourth quarter rally.

 

Other scores

Fouke won its first Conference 6-3A game of the year when the Panthers defeated host McGehee, 8-6. The Panthers are now 4-3 overall and 1-3 in league while the Owls tumble to 4-3, 2-2.
