Texas High tennis falls to Highland Park

DALLAS-Texas High's varsity tennis team lost to Highland Park, 10-2, in the finals of the area tournament on the Highland Park courts.

"The Tigers fought and competed in every match, and we are very pleased with the effort," Texas High head coach Toby Watson said in a press release. "No player gave in after losing tough first sets."

Texas High's next action is in the regional tournament Thursday and Friday in Allen, Texas.

PG sets up showdown

Pleasant Grove stayed in the thick of the District 14-4A championship race by downing Pittsburg in straight sets on the Lady Hawks' home court.

Pleasant Grove won, 25-5, 25-15, 25-15.

Kaylee Kelley served 16 winners for the Hawks (29-6, 8-1), who set up a showdown for the league crown against league-leading North Lamar (28-6, 9-0) Tuesday on the Lady Panthers' home court in Paris. North Lamar beat the Hawks when the teams met in the first round at PG.

Other Hawk standouts against Pittsburg were Anna Grace with eight kills and 14 set assists, Britton Anderson with seven kills, Blair Smith with 18 digs and Madeline Haak with four aces.

 

Lady Tigers third

Texas High downed Greenville, 3-1, to wrap up third place in the District 16-5A race in the Tiger Center.

The Lady Tigers, coached by Melissa Trotter-Hardy, won, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-21.

Texas High (18-16, 8-4) will enter the state playoffs as the league's third seed behind champion Hallsville and runner-up Sulphur Springs.

Tiger leaders against Greenville were: Kaitlyn Cross with 15 kills, Takeba Dowden with 14 kills and 17 service points, Katelyn Jordan with 39 assists, 15 points and 12 digs, and Mia Wilson with 14 points and 12 digs.

In the junior varsity match, THS won 25-16, 25-21, behind Bailey Groom's 20 points.

The Tigers made it a clean sweep by winning the freshmen match, 25-20, 17-25, 25-17. Emerald King served 16 points and Cindy Deleon 12 for THS.

 

Atlanta upsets L-E

ATLANTA, Texas-Homestanding Atlanta posted its first District 14-4A victory with a straight-set win over Liberty-Eylau on the Lady Rabbits' home court.

Atlanta won, 25-23, 25-23, 25-16.

The Lady Rabbs are now 11-16 overall and 1-8 in league while the Lady Leopards slip to 2-7 in district play.

Atlanta was led by Cydnee Wood and Alyssa Simmons with nine service points each, with Wood having three aces. TeShuna Sheppard had 14 kills and five blocks, Avery Trotter 25 assists and Wood 12 digs.

Atlanta closes out the regular season at home Tuesday against Pittsburg.

 

Lions clinch crown

HUGHES SPRINGS, Texas-New Boston defeated Hughes Springs in straight sets, 25-11, 25-22, 25-18, to wrap up the District 14-3A championship.

The Lady Lions (22-6 overall), who extended their winning streak to 11 matches in a row, improve to 12-1 in district with one match remaining (hosting Queen City Tuesday).

Paul Pewitt (25-10), which defeated Redwater, 3-0, is second in league at 10-3 while Hooks, which knocked off Queen City, is third at 9-4. Queen City is fourth at 8-5.

New Boston, Pewitt and Hooks have clinched state playoff berths.

 

Pewitt remains second

REDWATER, Texas-Paul Pewitt swept Redwater, 3-0, to remain in second place in the District 14-3A standings.

The Lady Brahmas (25-10, 10-3) won all three games, 25-22.

Ebbony Cobbins had 11 service points, eight kills and five digs, Brelee Lawings had eight points, 10 kills and 10 digs, Sallie Sartain 12 points and 12 assists, Kenzie Traylor 14 assists and Peyton Hawkins 10 digs for the victors, who have qualified for the state playoffs.

Pewitt closes out the regular season at home Tuesday against Daingerfield.

 

Hooks makes playoffs

HOOKS, Texas-Hooks beat Queen City, 3-1, in District 14-3A action, clinching a state playoff berth for the Lady Hornets.

Hooks won 13-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-18.

The Hornets (17-15, 9-4) are in third place with one match left Tuesday at Redwater.

Hooks' leaders were: Kenley Kyles (14 service points, 23 assists), Lexie Frachiseur (12 points, 14 kills, 10 digs), Daycoria Meadows (seven kills, 19 digs), Emma Farquhar (43 digs, nine points), and Brandi Hout (11 points, 11 digs).

Queen City was paced by Jacie Lance and Maci Stringer with 12 points each.
