Elder Gibson, Frisco prevail in family affair

Pleasant Grove falls to Raccoons

FRISCO, Texas-Frisco coach Vance Gibson played the role of Robert Young in "Father Knows Best," a television show in the late 1950s.

The Raccoons' veteran mentor had mixed feelings Friday night at the Ford Center after watching Frisco dismantle Pleasant Grove, 42-16, which is coached by his sons, Josh and Justin.

"We needed to be a different team in the third quarter; we came out a little wide-eyed by the stadium," PG head coach Josh Gibson said. "We probably didn't put our best step forward, but this facility had a lot to do with it.

"I was happy we came out and competed with a good football program. My dad said he was proud of me, and I'm proud of him, too. They weren't our enemies, they were our friends and family. That's the way it should be played every Friday night. The helps me put it in perspective the rest of the year."

After being dominated in the first half, Pleasant Grove came out of the dressing room at halftime a different team.

The Hawks got on the scoreboard quickly when Frisco punter Vincent Ton took a low snap on one knee for a safety.

PG got its first big break when Xavier Benson made his second fumble recovery at the Raccoons' 15 with 6:09 left in the third quarter. On third-and-goal from the 2, junior quarterback T.J. Cole threw a touchdown pass to Jackson Pace.

The Hawks went for two extra points and Cole's fade to Benson was good.

A Frisco punt was to follow and the Hawks drove to the Raccoons' 41 where third-down, and fourth-down passes were dropped.

That proved to be a major momentum change with Jamal Stanfield scoring twice in the fourth quarter on runs of 56 and 63 yards. He finished the game with 212 yards on 11 carries. Devin Wyatt had 107 yards on 12 totes.

Pleasant Grove (1-2) would score again on a 48-yard breakaway dash by Logan Wesley with 5:46 left in the game.

The Hawks controlled the third quarter, holding Frisco to a minus-6 yards on the ground. PG also gained more than 100 yards on the ground itself.

Pleasant Grove managed only two first downs and 55 total yards in the first half.

The Raccoons had no such problem, running for 241 yards, while not attempting a pass in the first two quarters.

Cole brought Hawk fans to their feet momentarily with a 27-yard run, but the first of four punts in the half followed with Frisco taking over at its own 25 after a fair catch.

Two quick first down runs were followed by a 52-yard keeper by senior quarterback Caden Wright for the game's first points with 6:35 left in the opening quarter.

An exchange of punts followed, the Raccoons second possession killed by a wild pitch that lost 17 yards.

PG was frustrated again, staging another long touchdown run for the host team. On third-and-5, Wyatt sprinted around the Hawks' right side and raced 69 yards untouched for a touchdown with 11 seconds remaining in the opening period.

Matt Day's 49-yard punt had Elijah Boyd retreating and he was tackled at his own 18 for a 12-yard loss on the return.

The Raccoons set up shop there and ran 7:31 off the clock with an 82-yard scoring drive.

Wyatt was tackled for back-to-back loses, setting up a third-and-goal from the Hawks' 14. The elder Gibson called a timeout to set up a pitch from Wright to Stanfield for six points with 3:00 left before intermission. Jack Reid was perfect on his third conversion, and it was 21-0 at halftime.

There were turnovers by both teams in those final three minutes.

Cole was intercepted by Connor Swope, who return the theft 9 yards to the PG 32. However, Benson recovered a Frisco fumble three plays later.
