Pleasant Grove sweeps L-E in varsity opener

Britton Anderson served 16 winners and had seven kills as Pleasant Grove swept Liberty-Eylau, 25-12, 25-14, 25-17, in the District 14-4A varsity volleyball opener for both teams Friday at Hawk Gym.

Anna Grace Miller had 13 service points and 16 assists, Blair Smith made 13 digs, and Madeline Haak had eight blocks for the Lady Hawks, who have won four straight matches.

Pleasant Grove is 22-5 on the year and hosts Atlanta at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Liberty-Eylau (7-5, which has lost its last two matches) is open Tuesday at travels to Pittsburg next Friday.

 

Lady Tigers go to 2-0

MARSHALL, Texas-Texas High remained unbeaten in District 16-5A ranks with a straight-set victory over the host Lady Mavericks, 25-7, 25-13, 25-6.

The Lady Tigers improve to 2-0 in district and 7-10 overall while Marshall tumbles to 1-12, 0-3.

Texas High was fueled by Takeba Dowden with 11 kills, eight service points and three blocks, Mia Wilson added 19 points and six digs, and Katelyn Jordan 15 points and 21 assists.

The Tigers made it a clean sweep by winning the junior varsity and freshmen matches.

Makenzie Wade served 15 winners in Texas High's JV 25-8, 25-20 victory. Asia Lloyd had 13 points in the Tigers' ninth-grade win over the Mavs, 25-11, 25-7.

Texas High's next district match is Tuesday at Greenville.

 

Three-way tie in 14-3A

NAPLES-OMAHA, Texas-Paul Pewitt knocked Hooks from the previously undefeated ranks in District 14-3A play, creating a three-way tie for the league lead.

The Lady Brahmas (19-7) defeated the Lady Hornets (12-12), 25-17, 25-19, 25-27, 25-20 in Pewitt's gymnasium.

The Brahmas' win, coupled with New Boston's sweep over winless DeKalb, made it a three-way logjam for the district lead between Pewitt, Hooks and New Boston. All have 4-1 district records.

Pewitt had several standouts in its triumph over the Hornets, including: Shianne Holmes (15 kills, 10 service points, four blocks), Brelee Lawings (14 kills, 11 digs, 10 points), Ebbony Collins (11 points, 11 digs, 10 kills), Sallie Sartain (20 assists, 10 points), Kenzie Traylor (19 assists, nine points, six digs and four blocks), Peyton Hawkins (15 digs, nine points), Lydia Makowiecki (seven blocks) and Taeya Jackson (five blocks).

Tuesday's district schedule matches New Boston at Hughes Springs, Pewitt at Redwater, Hooks at Queen City, and DeKalb at Daingerfield.

 

New Boston
tops DeKalb

DeKALB, Texas-Mikayla Baxley served in five points and had seven assists for DeKalb, but the Lady Bears were swept by New Boston, 25-20, 25-6, 25-9.

Ashley Tuppen made 10 digs and had three kills for DeKalb.

The Lady Lions (13-5, 4-1) move into a three-way tie with Hooks and Paul Pewitt for the District 14-3A lead.

 

Lady Mustangs rally

REDWATER, Texas-Facing a 2-1 set deficit, Hughes Springs rallied to a 3-2 victory over the host Lady Dragons.

The Lady Mustangs won, 25-15, 17-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-12.

Pacing Hughes Springs (16-10, 3-2) were: Kensley Echols (12 kills, 12 assists), Zoe Lanier (eight kills), Cypress Wright and Haylee Wilson (six kills each), Peyton Blythe (14 assists, three kills) and Kennedi Northam (nine digs and two aces).

Redwater slips to 12-15 overall and 2-3 in district.
