Clarksville cleans up in Area 15-16 2A track and field

HAWKINS, Texas-Clarksville won five individual first places and two relays to capture top honors Thursday in the Area 15-16 2A area track and field meet at Hawkins High School.

The Blue Tigers totaled 131 points, followed by Union Grove (120), Big Sandy (100) and Linden-Kildare (97).

No area girls team finished in the top three, but James Bowie runner Katelyn Sweatman was a double winner in the distance races. Union Grove took the girls crown with 185 points and Linden-Kildare was fourth with 58.

Clarksville's gold medals went to four-time winner Clashon Gaffney in the long jump (23-7 1/2) and triple jump (44-4.00), Lavonte Edwards in the 110 hurdles (15.41), Traderrian Rose in the 400 meters (53.52) and LaTerrance Childs in the 800 meters (2:08.91). Gaffney also ran on two first-place relay squads.

The Tigers also broke the tape in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays and were third in the 4x400 event. The top four in each event advance to the Region II-2A track and field meet, held April 28-29 at Porcupine Stadium in Springtown.

The team of Detaveon Lewis, Deontae Ricks, Rayzon Allen and Gaffney took the 4x100 race in 43.67. The team of Gaffney, Ricks, Allen and Lewis were clocked in 1:31.78 to win the 4x200. Linden-Kildare was second in 1:33.18 and Maud fourth in 1:34.82.

Clarksville placed third in the 4x400 in 3:40.15.

The Tigers' other top four finishers were: Lewis second in the 200 (23.14); Childs second in the 400 (53.64); Allen third in the high jump (5-10) and Ricks fourth in the 100 (11.91).

Placing in the top four for their respective teams were, Linden-Kildare: Ja'Kevian Rose second in 100 (11.86) and triple jump (42-03.25), Marcus Jones third in 200 (23.14), Marquise Jones second in long jump (23-00), high jump (5-10) and fourth in triple jump (43-54), second in 4x100 relay (43.67) and 4x200 relay (1:33.18), Ty Patterson fourth in high jump (5-10); McLeod: Mauldin third in 1600 (5:00.81); Maud: Jordan Creutz fourth in 400 (54.42), 4x200 relay fourth (1:34.82); McLeod: Smith third in shot (45-0 1/2).

In the girls' division, Sweatman won the 1600 (5:42.51) and 3200 (12:53.49). L-K's Peyton Turner was the only other area winner, taking the 800 in 2:34.60.

Finishing in the top four for area schools were, James Bowie: Rachel Norman second in 400 (1:05.91), Baylee Williams third in shot (30-05.25), Brittney Myers fourth in 100 hurdles (17.94); Clarksville: Eryn Reed third in 3,200 (32;03.25); third in 4x100 relay (52.31); Kamyia Lewis fourth in 100 (13.98), Chakyrah Griffin fourth in discus (99-01), fourth in 4x200 relay (1:55.36) Asjah Griffin fourth in high jump (4:08.00); Linden-Kildare: Kayla Hines second in 200 (27.08) and fourth in 3,200 (31-08.00), second in 4x200 relay (1:54.57), Jada Madlock third in 300 hurdles (53.18), Kayla Hines fourth in long jump (16.00); McLeod: Caitlin Hall third in 1,600 (5:52.86) and 3,200 (12:59.36), Haley Burden fourth in 400 (1:08.08), fourth in 4x200 relay (1:55.36); Avery: Carley Westbook second in 3,200 (12:56.00) and fourth in 1,600 (5:53.04); and Maud: Masey Hammonds second in 300 hurdles (52.70), Ericka Carr third in high jump (4-10).
