Lady Backs look to make their mark

Arkansas High volleyball coach Kelsey Jackson is optimistic heading into her fourth season.

The Lady Backs will begin their season Tuesday when they travel to Maud for a benefit game. Jackson is looking for her squad's growing pains from last year to develop into positive results during the 2017 season.

"I have five returners that have a bunch of varsity experience," Jackson said. "We introduced a new strength and conditioning program, so all the girls have really responded well throughout that process."

Jackson expects her middle blockers to play vital roles in the success of the team. Seniors Brooklyn Brewer (5-11) and Megan Holder (5-10), and junior Makenna Ivey (5-10) now have experience to go along with their athletic ability.

"I'm hoping for a great season for Brooklyn, Megan and Makenna. They have the athletic ability on the court to make great things happen, plus they're leaders on the team,"
Jackson said.

"Last year, we never could just get over that hump," Jackson said. "We play in a very competitive conference that's actually blended with the 5A schools. I blame much of last year on inexperience and it put a bad taste in our mouth. So coming out this year, we're going to overcome the slight mishaps that we had last year."

Seniors Tierra Holliman (5-5), Jasmine Benson (5-7), Tatiyana Johnson (5-4) and Jasmine Simmons will be asked to lead the Lady Backs with their seniority and varsity experience through their treacherous Conference 6A/5A West volleyball season.

"Lake Hamilton always have a strong volleyball program," Jackson said. "Last season, we met Benton in the conference tournament but we don't play them in our regular season. So in our conference you have to be prepared for every match. I believe we will be able to get over the hump this season.

"All offseason, we have preached to our girls about finishing," Jackson said. "From workouts, to practice and to our games. Having an attitude of finishing translates in all aspects of the game. Our goal is to get to the state tournament."

Key reserve junior Kasey Duncan is also expected to make a positive contribution this upcoming season.

"I'm looking for us to get past the mental mistakes and a positive push towards the playoffs. We've put forth the time and effort this summer, so I believe its time for us to reap the benefits," Jackson said.
