Texas High finishes third at Belt Williams Classic

MONROE, La.-Texas High dominated the fist quarter and never looked back as it coasted past Hamilton Christian Academy on Saturday to finish in third place at the Belt Williams Classic.

CJ Kelly wreaked havoc against the Hamilton team, scoring a team-high 22 points, and the duo of Kyle Wright and Caleb Wilson combined for 30 points-15 each-and Jacoby Johnson added another 11 points for the Tigers. Wilson was also named to the all-tournament team.

Wright nailed two 3-pointers in the win.

Texas High (6-5) will travel to Commerce for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff on Tuesday.

 

McLeod Tournament

McLeod wins tourney

McLEOD, Texas-McCleod scored 22 points in the fourth quarter and escaped a closely contested game against Queen City to win the McLeod Tournament championship game, 55-49.

Casey Smith and Zach Prince each finished with team-high 17 points, and teammate Mac Calhoun scored 13 for the Longhorns.

Queen City's Tyler Nolen netted a game-high 20 points and Austin Lowe fnished with 14. Both Nolen and Lowe connected on four 3-pointers apiece.

 

Big Sandy Tournament

Hughes Springs takes two

BIG SANDY, Texas-Hughes Springs duo of Chandler King and Tradarian Craver combined for 50 points en route to the Mustangs' 73-56 win over Winnsboro on Saturday in the Big Sandy Tournament.

King finished with a game-high 30 points, including four 3-pointers, as Craver poured in another 20 for Hughes Springs.

The Mustangs got hot in the second and third quarters of the second game and took down Celest, 64-51.

Brennan Dowell and Craver led the Mustangs with 14 points each and King added another 11 for the Mustangs. Dowell also connected on three 3-pointers.

Hughes Springs (8-3) will travel to Maud on Friday.

 

Girls

Great East Texas Shootout

Lady Tigers drop pair

BROWNSBORO, Texas-Texas High's girls couldn't overcome their slow start as LaPoynor cruised to a big 62-33 victory Saturday at the Great East Texas Shootout.

Maranda Miller scored a team-high 10 points and Mia Wilson added nine for the Lady Tigers.

In the second game, Bullard got hot in the third quarter en route to a comfortable 53-31 win over THS.

Sadeya Finley netted 10 points for the Lady Tigers.

Texas High (10-4) will host Hallsville on Tuesday.

 

Subvarsity

THS JV takes three

LONGVIEW, Texas-Texas High junior varsity won three of its four games at the Spring Hill JV Tournament, and wont the consolation game against, White Oak, 55-26.

Carlos Phillips netted 14 points for the Tigers, and teammate Aaron Meeks added 13.

In earlier games, THS (6-1) dropped its first game of the tourney to Marshall, 53-39. Jaquez Roberson finished with 19 points for the Tigers.

Tae Richardson led Texas High to a win in its next game when the Tigers dropped Sulphur Springs, 61-43. Richardson scored a team-high 15 points, and teammates Matt Arnold finished with 10, Justin Turner 13, and Montrarrius Johnson 11.

THS beat Grace Community, 89-45, in its third game, with Robison scorching the nets for 24 points, with Meeks and Miles Washington combining for another 25.

 

THS wins Invitational

LONGVIEW, Texas-Texas High's ninth-grade team got big contributions from a trio of players on Saturday as it won the Spring Hill Invitaitonal championship, defeating host Spring Hill, 71-69.

Gavon Smith was the Tigers' leading scorer with 21 points, with Caleb Arnold and Ben DePriest each adding 16.

Texas High (6-0) went unbeaten in the invitational, winning all four games.

On Friday, the young Tiger team beat Mount Pleasant, 66-56, with DePriest scoring a game-high 23 points. Arnold and Clayton Smith scored 18 and 12, respectively.

Texas High tipped off the invitational with a 50-43 win over Morrison on Thursday, and Arnold scored 17 points in that contest, with Smith adding 15.

The Tigers won the next game against Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill, 68-34. Smith led THS with 15 points, Arnold scored 12, DePriest netted 10 and Smith finished with 10.

 

TMS 'A' team champs

HALLSVILLE, Texas-Texas Middle School's eighth-grade 'A' team kept their unbeaten record alive, winning all four of their games of the Hallsville Tournament, including a 68-28 victory over Atlanta on Saturday in the championship game.

TMS (7-0) 'A' team dominated most of the tournament, with three blowouts and one game with a three-point
win.

Jayden Godwin and Sawer Pritchard scored 11 points apiece in the title game, and teammate Tae'shown Richardson added 10.

In the earlier game, the 'A' team edged Mount Pleasant, 37-34, with Godwin scoring 10 points.

TMS began the tournament with a 55-27 victory over host Hallsville on Thursday. Godwin led the Tigers with 12 points and Braylen Stewart netted 10.

Godwin again led the young Tigers to a win, scoring 12 points in a 40-18 triumph over Henderson. Michael Thomas added 11 points in TMS' win.

Texas Middle School's eighth-grade 'A' team will play Greenville on Monday night.

 

TMS 'B' team second

HALLSVILLE, Texas-Texas Middle School's eighth-grade 'B' team finished second in their tournament, losing to Mount Pleasant 28-16 in the championship game.

Brayson McHenry scored six points for the Tigers.

TMS' 'B' team (5-2) escaped with a 39-37 victory over Hallsville to set up the showdown against Mount Pleasant in the earlier game, with Kameron Thomas scoring a team-high 16 points.

In Thursday's contests, TMS routed Henderson, 32-12, and took down Atlanta, 39-24, in the second game.

Nate Mennie scored seven points in the first game and teammate Thomas finished with 11 in the second game.

Texas Middle School's eighth-grade 'B' team will play Greenville on Monday
night.

 

Red Lick teams both split

QUEEN CITY, Texas-Red Lick's eighth-grade girls 'A' team got the best of DeKalb, defeating the Lady Bears, 28-19, on Saturday to advance to the championship game at the Queen City Tournament.

Ann Elise Lindsay scored 13 points for the Lady Mustangs.

In the title bout, the Lady Mustangs fell to Linden-Kildare, 34-30, with Lindsay again leading the way with 12 points.

The seventh-grade 'A' team won their third-place game against Linden-Kildare, 26-2, with Emma Henard scoring 14 points. In an earlier game, the seventh-graders lost to DeKalb, 31-9.
