When Sulphur Springs' girls missed a shot they were able to draw a foul several times.

The Lady Wildcats (25-3, 11-0) wrapped up at least a share of the District 16-5A championship Tuesday at the Tiger Center in a waltz over Texas High, 77-50.

Sulphur Springs only had seven varsity players in uniform and five scored in double digits with sophomore Autumn Tanton leading the way with 20 points.

Sophomore guard Sadavia Porter tallied 16, with junior Kaylee Jefferson scoring 12 and senior Daieyshia Pruitt 11.

"I pray every game that we don't get in foul trouble," Sulphur Springs coach Jeff Chapman said. "I've got one junior varsity girl that I bring up when I can."

The Lady 'Cats never trailed after Pruitt and Porter scored in the first 50 seconds to put their team up 4-0.

It was 10-7 with 5:15 remaining in the first quarter after a basket by the Lady Tigers' Amiyah Rone, who finished the game with a team-high 10 points.

At that point Sulphur Springs scored 10 unanswered points to pull away, and the Tigers never got closer than nine the rest of the game.

Sulphur Springs' biggest lead was 29 (68-39) early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers scored 10 of the next 11 points behind Kerrigan Dunn, Mia Wilson, Antonia Porter and Rone.

However, the Cats scored the game's final eight points in the final 90 seconds to rebuild a 27-point cushion.

"There's a reason Sulphur Springs is ranked among the top 20 in the state," THS coach Craig Collvins said. "They did a good job tonight. They pushed the ball, playing well in transition. Win or lose our girls compete and play hard, we just couldn't keep up the scoring with them."

Texas High's pressure forced 17 turnovers, but the Cats more than made up for that by dominating the glass, 46-36. Pruitt had a game-high 12 rebounds, with Jefferson pulling down 10 caroms.

The Tigers' junior varsity roared out to a 20-point lead and survived a furious fourth quarter rally by Sulphur Springs to remain unbeaten in district play, 41-38. Brittany Kile led the winners with 13 points, while Danielle Godbolt scored 15 for Sulphur Springs.
