Pleasant Grove vaults over Henderson, 12-1

LONGVIEW, Texas-Pleasant Grove's Tyler Jeans pitched a five-inning 2-hitter to pace the Hawks to a 12-1 victory over Henderson Friday in the Pine Tree Tournament.

Jeans (1-0) struck out nine and went the distance in the game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. Jeans aided his cause with an RBI triple and run-scoring double for Pleasant Grove (2-1), which will continue tournament action today against an opponent and time to be determined.

Heath Ferguson and Caleb Bolden banged out three hits apiece to pace the Hawks' 14-hit attack. Bolden drove in three runs and Ferguson two. Carson Cox and Keaton added two hits each for the winners.

The Hawks opened the season with a pair of games Thursday. They beat Liberty-Eylau, 9-1, and dropped a 6-5 decision to Carthage. Against the Leopards, Bolden picked up the pitching win, striking out seven in five innings. He added three hits at the plate.

Liberty-Eylau 11, Center 2

LONGVIEW, Texas-Liberty-Eylau had only four hits, but the Leopards made them count in the win over the Roughriders.

Cutter Webb and Triston Brooks had a single and two RBI each for the Leopards, and Jacoby Ross had a single. Jaxon Covington had a double for Center.

L-E's Garrett Brooks (1-0) gave up four hits over the 6-inning game and picked up the pitching win.

The Leopards (1-1) will play the winner of Friday night's late game matching Henderson and host Pine Tree in today's second round of tournament play.

Russell Athletic Invitational

Frisco Liberty 7, Texas High 6

DENTON, Texas-Texas High took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the fifth, but Frisco Liberty scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to escape with the one-run win in the tournament.

Jakob Hearne (0-1), who relieved starter Walker Davis in the fourth, gave up the winning run and took the loss. Eric Suttton and Kyle Choate had a double and RBI each for the Tigers, and Chris Sutton added a single and an RBI.

Liberty outhit Texas High, 9-7. Michael Strater had two singles and two RBI for the winners.

The Tigers will face McKinney at 10 a.m. today at Braswell Field in tournament play.

Pine Tree Tournament

Lady Hawks split

LONGVIEW, Texas-Pleasant Grove blasted Class 6A John Tyler, 23-0, and dropped an 8-0 decision to New Boston Friday in tournament play.

Against John Tyler, Kristin Key had three hits, and Emily Hilton and Hanna Snyder two each to pace the Lady Hawks, who scored 14 runs in the first inning and nine more in the second. Pleasant Grove finished with 13 hits.

Faith Dossey picked up the pitching win.

New Boston's Madison Thomas smacked two doubles and had two RBI as the Lady Lions shut out the Hawks.

McKenzie Thomas had a double, single,and an RBI for New Boston. Teammate Morgan Alexander added an RBI.

Dossey went 2 for 2 for Pleasant Grove.

 

Allen Tournament

THS splits pair

ALLEN, Texas-Texas High split a pair of games Friday in the Allen Tournament, falling to host Allen, 12-2, before rebounding to beat Canyon, 5-0.

The Lady Tigers, who are 6-3 overall and 2-2 in pool play, will face Coppell at 9 a.m. today in their final tournament game.

In the win over Canyon, Alexis Boulden led THS with a double and two RBI and Kylee Spriggs added a single and RBI.

Mabry Smith (4-1) gave up only one hit over the distance, fanning 13.

Host Allen erupted for eight third-inning runs to defeat the Tigers in four innings by the mercy rule. Courtney Sheek led THS with a double and two RBI and Braley Groom added a single. Lindsey Eggar (2-2) was the losing pitcher.

Brittany Coe led Allen's nine-hit attack with a two-run homer and single. Nicole Peters also had two doubles and a single to knock in two runs.

In Thursday's first-round games, Texas High dropped a 6-2 decision to Dallas Bishop Lynch and then beat Frisco Lone Star, 4-3, in eight innings.

In the win over Lone Star, the Tigers scored the winning run in the eighth inning. Braley Turner paced THS with a triple and three singles and two RBI. Kaitlyn Cross added a triple and drove in a run. Smith (3-1) went the entire eight innings in the center, scattering four hits.

Sheek had a single and drove in a run and Groom added a single in the loss to Bishop Lynch. Abby Thrash went six innings and took the loss. Racheal Cantrell had a solo homer for the winners.

PITTSBURG, Texas-For the first time in school history, Pleasant Grove defeated Pittsburg in soccer.

With the victory, the Hawks move into first place in district competition.

Dillon Williams scored the lone goal the PG. Matt Day has 12 saves for the Hawks.

 

Tennis

Eastman Invitational

LONGVIEW, Texas-Pleasant Grove and Texas High's junior varsity competed against 11 other teams Friday in the annual Eastman Tournament.

The Hawks' Shannon Lee defended her girls singles crown by winning her five matches, including an 8-0 victory in the finals.

In girls doubles, PG's Caroline Joyce and Gracie Higgins beat teammates Emily Gatlin and Jisu Choi, 8-1, for third place.

After dropping an 8-6 decision to Texas High's Davis Miller and Dustin Tyree, 8-6, PG's Wes Humphrey and Jack Foster rebounded to win the consolation title, 8-4, over a Gilmer duo.

Texas High JV's Shelbi Poole won third place in girls singles and Nick Mitchell captured the consolation title in boys singles.

The Tigers will travel Tuesday to Longview for another tournament.
