THS girls top Dallas Hillcrest

GREENVILLE, Texas-Texas High's Rachael Shewmaker kicked in two goals, and the Lady Tigers defeated Dallas Hillcrest 3-1 in its first match of the day at the Greenville Lion Invitational soccer tournament.

Mya Bowers assisted on Shewmaker's first goal. Anna Morgan booted in the first goal of the game for Texas High, who took a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Gracyn Upton legged in a hat trick, and the Tigers trampled Greenville's junior varsity 12-0.

Texas High's Sarah Rogers and Shewmaker scored two goals apiece. Teammates Aliyah Forte, Bowers, Emma Wolf, Kayla Teague, and Kendyl Myers had one goal each for the Tigers.

Texas High plays North Forney in the semifinals at 11:15 a.m. The championship game is at 8 p.m.

 

Pine Tree 1, Pleasant Grove 0, 1st game; Pleasant Grove 7, Lindale 2, 2nd game

HALLSVILLE, Texas-Pleasant Grove split a pair of girls soccer matches Friday in the Hallsville soccer tournament.

The Lady Hawks dropped a 1-0 decision to Class 5A Pine Tree on a penalty kick late in the game. Pleasant Grove also hammered Lindale, 7-2, in the second match.

The Hawks had three players make multiple goals in defeating the Lady Eagles. Katie Hutcheson led the way with three goals, including Pleasant Grove's first two for a 2-0 advantage. She also scored the Hawks' fifth goal. She was assisted by Haley Hearn, Sophie Powell and Caroline Joyce.

Hearn scored two goals herself, and was assisted by Hutcheson on one and Sophie Tuttlebee on the other.

Tuttlebee also scored two goals, getting assists from Hearn and Joyce.

PG Coach Andy Allen's Hawks will travel crosstown Tuesday to face Texas High in their next match.

 

Boys Basketball

 

Queen City 63, DeKalb 56

QUEEN CITY, Texas-It was Queen City's dominating second quarter performance that propelled it past visiting DeKalb.

After being outscored in the first quarter 12-16, the Bulldogs owned the second quarter, putting up 22 points and holding back the Bears to only six points.

Tyler Nolan Led the way for the Wildcats with 20 points, including four three-pointers. Alex Carver contributed 14 points to complement.

In the third period Queen City maintain its lead though DeKalb followed close behind.

The Bears put their heads down in the last quarter, outscoring its host by 7, but to no avail as time expired.

DeKalb had three players in double figures for the night. Wyatt Lavergne spearheaded the assault with 17 points, including five triples. Tristen Jamison had 15, and Logan Corbett added 10 of his own.

The three-pointer was a key part of both teams game when one considers that both teams made 22 field goals; the Bears made 6 treys and the Wildcats made 10.

DeKalb slips to 1-4 in District 14-3A while Queen City climbs to 4-3.

 

New Boston 67,
Hughes Springs 59

HUGHES SPRINGS, Texas-New Boston remained perfect in district play defeating Hughes Springs on the road.

Dantray Copeland led the Lions' surge, scoring 17 points in the win. Deaundre Robinson chipped in 14 points for New Boston.

Tradarian Carver led all scorers, dropping a game-high 18 points for Hughes Springs. Chandler King contributed 12 points for the Mustang offense.

Alex Bruce helped out with 10 points for Hughes Springs.

 

El Dorado 82, Hope 62

HOPE, Ark.-El Dorado's Daniel Gafford, a University of Arkansas signee, poured in 19 points to lead four players in double figures as the Class 6A Wildcats romped to the lopsided win against the host Bobcats.

Charles Manning also finished with 19 points to support Gafford, Czar Perry added 18 points and Ryu Unice 14 against Class 5A Hope.

Markle Haynie led the Bobcats with 25 points and T.D. Walton added 17.

El Dorado improves to 13-2 with the win and will face LR Mills, one of two teams to beat the Wildcats this season, today in the Martin Luther King Basketball Showcase in Little Rock. Mills beat the Wildcats, 77-64, in the team's first meeting.

Hope (4-7) will host Camden Fairview Tuesday.

 

Hooks 60, Redwater 52

HOOKS, Texas The Hornets defeated the Dragons in a tightly contested game.

This game was tied at 25 at halftime before the Hornets used a 22-11 third quarter to pull away and hold off the Dragons.

Each team had two players in double figures. The Hornets were led by Carter Duncan with 20-points and Cannon Price with 12.

 

Daingerfield 55, Paul Pewitt 41

DAINGERFIELD, Texas-The Tigers (10-10, 5-0) got off to a fast start and cruised to a victory over the Brahamas.

The Tigers led 17-9 after the first quarter and never looked back in their 14-point victory. The Tigers were led by Micah Reeves with 16 points and Reggie Jeter with 15.

Tyshawn Mitchell led the Brahamas with 15 in their loss.

 

Girls Basketball

 

Genoa Central 53, Mena 30

GENOA, Ark.-Genoa Central used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Mena in Conference 7-3A action on the Lady Dragons' home court.

Genoa Central (14-4, 4-1) was led by Victoria Hill with 15 points, Carly Wood added 14 and Eden Crow 13. Hill and Wood had a pair of 3-pointers each for the Dragons, who pulled away with a 19-8 second-quarter run. They blew the game open with a 20-5 third-quarter spurt to take a 44-20 lead into the final quarter.

Mena got 11 points apiece from Reagan and Grace Wagner, who had two a pair of treys.

Genoa Centrals travels to Prescott on Tuesday.

 

Queen City 55, DeKalb 41

DEKALB, Texas-Jessica Jones dominated the court Tuesday night, leading Queen City to a 55-41 District 14-3A victory over DeKalb.

Jones tallied up 26 points, including five three-pointers.

As a team the Lady Bulldogs hit seven treys while its host only hit three, a difference of 12 points in a game that ended with a 14 point margin.

Queen City opening the game firing on all cylinders, outscoring DeKalb 21-8 in the first quarter.

The hot-handed Bulldogs lost momentum in the second stanza however, putting nine of the scoreboard, while the Lady Bears stayed consistent and put up another eight.

DeKalb pushed in the Third, cutting a 14 point halftime gap to nine, with help from their high point Mikayla Baxley who gathered 16 points and dropped three triples.

Both teams made 14 field goals over the course of the game; the difference though was that half of Queen City's FGs came from behind the arch.

In the final period the Bulldogs outscored the Bears 14-9.

Jacie Lance assisted Jones in racking up points for Queen City, contributing 16 points, nine of which she earned at the line.

DeKalb falls to 7-15 on the season and 2-6 district.

The Bears will play Tuesday at Hooks.

 

El Dorado 53, Hope 37

HOPE, Ark.-El Dorado, a Class 6A team, won handily over Class 5A Hope in a non-district match-up.

The Wildcats (10-4) had two dynamic players who helped pave the way to make the road-win possible, Mekayla Kicks with 21 and Victoria Rice who added 18 points of her own.

In the opening quarter the two teams broke even, both putting up 10 points.

It was in the second period though that Hope (2-7) began to slip away as the margin increased to seven when the half ended; and that deficit only increased in the remaining quarters.

Raley Potter shot phenomenally for the Bobcats, matching Hick's 21 points for the game high.

Hope's loss can likely be attributed to the difference in made field goals between itself (8) and El Dorado (18) and the superb shooting by Hicks and Rice.

The Bobcats will play host against Camden Tuesday in a Conference 5A clash.

 

New Boston 47,
Hughes Springs 31

HUGHES SPRINGS, Texas The Lady Lions overcame a sluggish first quarter and used a big fourth quarter to defeat the Lady Mustangs.

The Lady Lions lead by four points at the end of three quarters before a 20-8 fourth quarter propelled them to an easy victory.

Madison Thomas had 15 points, and McKinzee Thomas had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Lady Lions.

Boe Lanier led the Lady Mustangs with sevens points in a losing effort.

 

Nashville 52, Fouke 49

FOUKE, Arkansas The Lady Scrappers Used a huge second half to defeat the Lady Panthers.

After trailing 23-10 at halftime, the Lady Scrappers used a 42-26 second half to edge the Lady Panthers. The Lady Scrappers were led by Asia Mann with 25 points and Kendall Kirchoff with 12 points.

The Lady Panthers placed three players in double-figures, led by Hannah Mauldin with 15 points. Crystal Larry chipped in 12, and Laykin Smallwood with 11 in a losing effort.
