Gilmer @ Liberty-Eylau

GILMER (2-0)
at LIBERTY-EYLAU (1-1)

KICKOFF: 7:30 p.m., Harris Field
LAST WEEK: Top-ranked (3A) Gilmer built a 70-0 lead in the third quarter, eventually beating Emory Rains, 76-12. Mount Pleasant rallied for two fourth quarter touchdowns to beat the Leopards, 34-28.
LAST YEAR: All-state quarterback Darian Godrey scored on two short runs and Gilmer beat L-E, 28-14. The Leopards ran for 272 yards with Tra Carson gaining 88 on 17 carries, and Marquez Clark getting 84 on 10 totes.
GAME FACTS: The two schools have played each other three consecutive years, L-E eliminating unbeaten Gilmer in the 2006 playoffs en route to the 3A Division I state championship. The Buckeyes eliminated L-E in the first round the next year, and beat the Leopards during the regular season last fall. L-E leads the all-time series 11-4. Gilmer coach Jeff Traylor is looking for his 100th career win against the Leopards. L-E coach Pat Brady is 41-24 during his six-year head coaching career. The two schools have combined for four state championships over the last decade. This will be the first time Gilmer has played at L-E in 30 years. L-E’s 1999 state championship football team will be honored tonight with receptions before and after the game. School officials expect 15-20 members of that team to attend, including Lamarcus Franklin and Brandon Rollins, both current members of the L-E coaching staff. Brandon Jones was the 3A Player of the Year that season and is now playing for the San Francisco 49ers. The pregame reception will be held at 6 p.m. in the Media Center.
COACHES’ COMMENTS:
Gilmer’s Jeff Traylor—“Liberty-Eylau is very athletic and physical. They run right at you. They’ve played in a lot of big games, so they’re used to playing really good teams. They always play us tough. L-E has two athletic quarterbacks that can score any time. Their running backs are very good, and they’ve got one of the best receivers (Marquez Clark) in Texas. It’s no secret they’ll try to keep our offense off the field by pounding the ball. That’s always been their plan.”
L-E’s Pat Brady—“There will be two talented teams on the field. I think both teams are a little better than last year, and it should be a great game. As far as Gilmer’s ranking, I don’t put much stock in rankings. I don’t see how anybody knows who’s the number one team right now. Our game plan is to score more points than they do. It could be low scoring, it could be high scoring. I believe we’ve got a very talented team when we play like we can play.”
